I had a swelling in my leg, just above the knee. My GP sent me for x rays , and finally got an Ultrasound appointment some 7 weeks later , where the consultant said if I hadn't been in there that day , the next would have been an ambulance .
At every Doctor I saw , all "ASKED ME" was I a Diabetic . my response wss , "Not that I know of" , no I never had any of the symptoms they asked .
I was admitted straight away and put on intro anti biotics, but it did not reduce the infection , so a Cross cut surgery was needed , to remove the abscess .
I was dischraged and was required to see a GP Nurse every day to clean and chnage the dressing on the open wound , and to see a Hospital oyt patient Doctor every week .

After a week, I just happened to say to the GP Nurse , how everyone had asked me iof I was Diabetic , but NO ONE had ever done a test , and could I for my own sanity have one done by her .. Next day with "my sample bottle" in hand she did the dip test , and her eyes went wide, and then did a blood finger prick test , with a result of 19.9 mmol/L .

I was then urgently moved in to the GP, who took a blood sample to be sent off, and that then came back as 16.9 ...

This was 2020 February , just as Covid was making itself evident , ...

I have no idea at what point any medical person would have bothered to do a test , and only that I asked for one was it discovered I was a T2, the support because of C19 was all pretty much nil with all the usual appointments being cancelled , flu and Pneumonia jabs not given etc, so pretty Pi** poor really.

I have only recently had a Heart Attack that resulted in a CABG x 2 , and the meds I am on are known to increase blood sugars , so now trying to manage a Nutrition factor of low saturated fats (there goes my food groups Ive been having since T2 and carb reduction) , and the Carbs reduction needed.

The instructions post OHS is to eat carbs , well thats not likely (buy a Heart food cook book, its all carbs , buy a Diabetic one and its all Meat proteins .... add that to the Meds that raise the sugars , life now is 100% worse than it was before .

Salmon and Eggs , with Broccoli and Cauliflower are my staple food, with Chicken and spinnich ..

I did still wonder just what would have happened if I had never of asked for that Test myself ... for what it costs , it should become a standard to be done on anyone when they are hospital admitted or seeing a GP after a long period of never doing so .

so through groups and forums and face book pages , I have learnt a lot , and hope to contribute where I can and be of some worth .

Than you all

PS , I am a biker live and breath for them, having ridden in lots of countries of the world and most of the USA ,and thats all I have to say about that :) .

Hi BanditRider,

I'm a newbie too, but I just wanted to say Welcome, and to say that it seems you haven't had a great experience with medics.

I got my diagnosis after I went to the GP after having had numbness and tingling down one side. They ruled out a stroke, which I knew it wasn't, and then suggested I had an HbA1c test.

And the rest is history, as they (who are they?) say.

I had salmon tonight (eggs tomorrow morning). Lovely!

This seems like a great place - I've had some really good replies and I'm sure someone will come along with a much better reply than this.

Hello fellow Diagnosis day twin!
Well almost, I was tested, at my request (because my sisters recent diagnosis and my age put me at high risk), early in February 2020. I then went on holiday for over a month and only got to phone for my results 2 days after First Lockdown Day. I've never seen anyone, only had one telephone call saying what they would normally do (dn , eye checks etc) but couldn't!
Over the next few months I went low carb, lost weight, got my bg down , and by the time I did get a face to face appointment my bg was so low the DN refused to believe I had T2 and refused to put my diagnosis on the system, therefore I get no support at all, no eye checks, no regular hba1c.
Luckily I found this forum and now mange and monitor myself far better than the NHS ever would.

I can't help with the heart stuff and the other complications that brings, but there are lots of threads and support on here to bring new ideas and recipes that may, or may not, fit what you need.

Do you test your bg to see what certain foods do to your bg?

I can't give you two emoticons, but believe me, you deserve a winner's cup for all you have done, and the biggest hug for all the NHS help you haven't had. Your own actions have proved what a star you are.

I have started to collate information on the effect and delays , so becoming more adept.

Today was Avocado, very good fats , low carb , high fibre and low GI/GL,

post waking & pre eating (fast) 6.2 mmol/L , then after 2 Hr , 6.1, then after 3 hr 5.9 mmol/L , so avocado are pretty ok i think to add to my list

I have managed to find a food recipe book written by a USA Nurse that covers both T2 and Heart patients, its a revelation to have both considered for an end result.

my Blood test results are now taken in the USA format rather than what my meters all give in the mmol/L , so its a bit of a pain to now have to convert the readings, think on my next USA trip Ill have to purchase a USA reader and hope the strips are actually the same for the same model (Ill email abbot first though to check if its possible) ,
