Hi,

still consumed with this new diagnoses, can anyone tell me what your ideal numbers should be roughly when it diet controlled?? and is there anything to look for on food products labels that indicate whats best to eat??

ie: is numbers under 10 good?

just 9 day diagnosed and so scared to think i might die young from eating something i shouldn't, or go blind...before all this i never thought of diabetes as a serious illness just an illness that meant you cant eat sweets or cakes,,,theres so much more too it

soory for my rant...but since 9 days ago i cant think of anything else!!
blood counts would ease my mind please....

thanks for your patience

I'm pretty sure that you were given the advice that Sue and I hand out here. In there it tells you that as a Type 2 the NICE 2011 guidelines for Bg levels are as follows :

Fasting(waking/pre meals)............between 4 - 7 mmol/l
2 hrs after meals.......................no more than 8.5 mmol/l.

We always add the caveat that if you can get those numbers lower whilst avoiding anything below 4 mmol/l then so much the better. They are not set in stone.

10 mmol/l is not what I would call a good number, but others might think it is. I took a DSN to task over this recently as it is criminal to tell newly diagnosed levels such as that are fine when she herself knows that it isn't. The excuse was that we don't want to stress the person .......
I would be more stressed knowing that my level was way above the guideline figures TBH ! :(

thanx so much,

my morning reading are below 7...i had a few oven chips with peas and minced beef & gravy...before this meal i was 6.2...2 hours after it was 9.5!!

i guess that ws down to the oven chips!!?

thanx again

The chips, yes, but unfortunately the peas too will have made your levels go up :(

There are two books that can help you - Calorie Carb Fat Bible 2011 ( it is updated every year) which is a large book and smaller books (pocket sized) but less accurate are the Collins Gem Carb Counter or Calorie Counter (which includes carbs). You can find them on Amazon or in good book stores. These should take some of the mystery out of carb counting.

possibly the gravy too - depends how it was thickened and how thick it was (I used to love my gravy in slices  )

Also portion sizes - "a few chips " isn''t very clear how many and we all have different ideas how many a few are - for me a "few" chips is 6 to 8 finger size chips

It's early days for you so keep going you will get there :) - the book Daisy has reccomended is invaluable - and so is testing - no matter what your GP/DN may tell you.

It's a good sign that your morning reading is below 7 another couple of weeks of finding out what you can and cannot tolerate and you will see your numbers coming down I am sure - try to stop stressing so much as this will not help your numbers either -You are being proactive and not sticking your head in the sand - it's a big learning curve and takes some getting used to :) .

Slowly , slowly , catchy monkey Roxy, your only nine days down the diabetes road and you have a fasting level of 7mmol/L, well done :D Rome wasnt built in a day (OK thats enough cliché's) but you are going in the right direction, next time you have minced beef, chips and peas have fewer chips and test again, do that again and again untill you have a better post meal level ie closer to your pre meal level and you will then know how larger portion of chips you can eat or like Lovinglife and I do and count them.

As lovinglife says "Also portion sizes - "a few chips " isn''t very clear how many and we all have different ideas how many a few are - for me a "few" chips is 6 to 8 finger size chips"

Twelve or so thin chips for me :D but if I went for bigger finger sized chips then 6 or 8 would probably be about right for me too :D

It really will get easier Roxy everyone gets worried and freaked out after being given the 'news' hopefully those like you who want to face it and do what they can to control it will be the lucky ones that can put off or completely avoid complications later in life :D

Dont forget the mantra, Test test tesT tEst teSt TesT Test test tesT tEst teSt TesT

thank you all for your helpful replies...i thought the peas was low GI  just checked collings gems Gi book (recomended by Sid) and i must have read it wrong...heck heck!! :?

i had loads of peas as well to help fill me up!!...i must admit i think there might have been about 10 chips...oh well not to worry although it did shoot up to 10.3 when i tested again,

i changed my bran flakes this morning to wall paper paste oops i mean porridge made with water and half bannana 2 hours after 8.2!!, maybe its the bannana?!!

but would you say that was exceptable? or just strife for less?

and which is more important do you think? losing the weight (i have a lot) or keeping BG down? maybe both!!
i think i need to keep checking my GI book and not guess...now whats for lunch??? grass and water

It could be both the porridge and the banana - I certainly couldn't eat the both together - it not just about the GI of the food its about how many carbs too - lots on here can't take porridge although I manage a 25g portion made with skimmed milk - I add some seeds and nuts and a couple of raspberries to alter the GI

Check the total carb content of everything not just the GI - 8.2 is within the NICE guidelines I always aim for less than 7 2 hrs after - its a choice you have to make for yourself.

as to what is more important - yes you are right its both - but you may find as you lose weight you insulin resistance will go down which will help your numbers

just keep reading on here and take in as much info as you can - but don't overload

Using veg to fill up is a good idea - but use veg with low carbs - cabbage is my best friend, courgettes, mushrooms, salad stuff - one thing I used to do was have a big bowl of lettuce, cucumber and a couple of tomatoes about 10 minutes before my main meal - as a starter if you like - its amazing how much this can fill you.

Also take time eating your food - it takes the brain 20minutes to tell the tummy your full!

thanx lovinglife :)

i have such a lot to learn  , thanx for your input, i did read that monthly periods can alter reading?!!, i will be trying special K for cereal with a little sweetner and see if that works, such a learning curve isnt it

Hi Roxy
You are right it is a learning curve or in some things a complete re think for instance you may be better with a breakfast of lean bacon and scrambled egg instead of cereal Some of us cant cope with cereal at all. Test and see :!:

Hi roxy, I am learning everyday with what i shop for and eat to "test test test test test test" 2-4hrs after eaten to see what dosent spike me its the only way forward n a definete guide to keep better control of BS and correct portion size to eat. This way you can have things you like n fancy just "reduce" the portion n success enjoy life more. Soon it becomes second nature n you will wonder what all the fuss was. Let yourself be guided by your BS readings its the only way you will know what direction to go in. I am doing it n it DOES work have started to lose weight plus my stubborn high bs are starting to come down!!! am so chuffed plus thrilled . Am type 2 currently on victoza injections n diet control .
