Last Saturday my fingers and toes started feeling sore, now the whole length of my fingers are achy and the soles of my feet and my heels ache too. It's not a pins and needles type of pain, more like when you go outside on a cold day then come back inside somewhere warm. It's more achy than anything else, but they're also tender. I'm terrified that this is the beginning of neuropathy, but my blood sugar is generally well controlled and my last HbA1c was 38 (5.6). I'm thinking it could be a circulatory problem, but my fingers and toes aren't cold, my other thought was maybe arthritis, but my joints aren't swollen.

I've had diabetes for 3 years and I'm 39. My next appointment with the diabetic clinic is at the beginning of August, I'm wondering if I should phone and ask if it can be brought forward. What do you think, I'm pretty worried :(

If you mean my avatar, thanks! ;)

Scapegoat, do you have any idea what might be causing your soreness? My GP doesn't have a diabetic nurse, and the nurse they have isn't that clued up about diabetes. I had a bit of a bad week before the pain started, in terms of food (family party then a few days of eating things I shouldn't), but my BG is back to normal now and I don't make it a habit to eat stuff I shouldn't on a regular basis.

I've never had this happen before in the 3 years I've had diabetes, even before I was diagnosed, and I must have had BG off the scale back then. As you said, I'm almost scared to go to the dr and find out what's going on, I'm thinking if it's still a problem at the end of the week then I should phone the clinic. It's not severe pain, more uncomfortable and it's constant too. Can you speak to a DN or dr? How long have you had diabetes? I'm not taking any meds, I'm diet and exercise only for now.

Scapegoat, I'm glad you've got an apt, the thing I've learned this last year is not to leave things, get in there early.

If I hadn't had a pre op assessment and it came back as 164, I would have still been walking round in a hyper state now, or maybe hospitalised.

Hope all is ok for you x

Good luck with your appointment tomorrow Scapegoat, I'd really like to know what's causing your pain as I'm not sure I've gotten to the bottom of what's causing mine. I eventually went to see my GP on Friday, as I couldn't sleep with the pain Wednesday night, but I'm not sure I'm totally convinced by what the doctor told me. She said it couldn't be neuropathy as it came on so suddenly. she suggested it could be a swelling of my fingers and toes caused by the heat, I'm not so sure about this, although it's been a bit cooler here for the past few days and the pain has almost gone, (but I've also been monitoring my BGs really closely and keeping them low too), I could just be overly worried though. She ordered a vitamin B12 and a thyroid test, but I'm not sure how problems with my thyroid or vitamin deficiency would cause painful extremities. I have a diabetes appointment at the beginning of August so I'll ask about this then too. For now, I'm grateful that the pain has almost subsided.

Typing b12 deficiency symptoms into google reveals:
  • a reduced ability to feel pain.
amongst many other things. Maybe not related?

Even if I have a B12 deficiency, I won't be able to have injections or take supplements as I have IC and B vitamins absolutely kill my bladder! I tried some again recently, at a very low dose, and it caused a flare up of symptoms which has taken a while for me to get over :( I'm taking evening primrose every day, and I'm planning on trying some alpa lipoic acid too as this is also meant to help with neuropathy (if this is what's causing the problems with my fingers and toes), although the acid part of the ALA worries me because of the potential to cause bladder pain.
