SR Metformin Info?

I'm on the regular Glucophage, and have been for 5 years. Although they are very effective, I do have problems with them.

Anyone who has been on regular Metformin, then changed to the SR, are they as effective at bringing the sugar down?

I'm thinking about asking my GP if I can try the SR.

Hi. I think you will find if you look at the various research reports on the NHS/NICE Diabetes websites that plain and SR Met have similar BS reduction effects which in practice isn't that much unless you are very much overweight and insulin resistant. The SR version is manily needed for those who have stomach problems with the plain version. Your GP can add further tablets at 2nd and 3rd levels to the Met if your Hba1c remains above around 7.0. I had Gliclazide and then Sitagliptin added. Mind you with an Hba1c of only 6.1 I wouldn't worry too much!
 
I have had stomach craps followed by vomiting so I have now been put on SR metformin. Perhaps too early to say if it works or not. But I am very interested in getting information on the latest research on SR metformin. Can anyone give me any web liks?

Hi Helena

I was moved onto SR Metfromin in early December after months of telling my doctor about the bad stomach problems I had with standard Metformin. I'm also taking Sitigliptin and so far I have to say I don't think my BS have changed much. My last Hba1c was 6.2 but that was before the change over so only time will tell but when I do my fairly regular testing I'm getting similar results and my stomach is generally alot better. The trouble I have is that I keep loosing weight (I know this doesn't sound like a problem but I now have a BMI of 18.3) and keeping my BS down to 7 or below means I have to eat a diet that means I keep loosing even more weight aaarrrrr! Anyway as far as I can see the slow release version is just as effective with blood sugar control in my case. Goodluck!

Hi Meg! I had a similar problem. I started "grazing" on nuts, and that helped a lot. They have lots of protein, and yes they do have carbs, but very low GI and don't seem to affect my BGs. I go for walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachios - in fact, anything but cashews which are high in carbs and high GI (they're not really nuts actually). My weight levelled out; in fact I gained a little. Obviously don't go for "honey coated", and if you're worried about salt (I'm not) then sainsburys, and I'm sure all big supermarkets, do big bags of unsalted nuts in the grocery section.

I also have a low weight problem and like grazer I also snack on nuts I also have double cream with walnuts for breakfast and I eat lots of cheese and yogurt I am now steady at 7 stone and I take 2 SR Glucophage 1gr 2x daily My GP prescribed me a product called calogen which is basically liquid fats it has no carbs so didnt affect my BGs but it did help me to put on about 7 pounds .It was recommended by the dietician you may be able to get your GP to prescribe it for you

Am I rightin saying that metformin and glucophage is the same thing, it's just a brand thing? Pretty sure I am, but something made me doubt........,
 
Correct grazer Glucophage is the brand name .Metformin is the stuff :lol:

Glucophage is better than the cheaper brands though. I was given boxes that just said Metformin on them, and I did suffer with stomach problems.

My GP never offered me SR and I hadn't heard of it then, so he put me on Glucophage and the stomach problems cleared up.

Thanks Grazer and Carty, I do eat alot of walnuts and other mixed nuts (I chuck out cashews as I heard they were bad) and I snack on babybels at work. I eat eggs and bacon etc for breakfast. My cholesterol was 4.2 so not too bad at the last check up but even though I am trying I'm still loosing the weight, I'm worried it's a sign that complications have set in. All my results were good at last diabetes review in Dec except my Liver function which I was told was 'elevated' and had been for a while! No one had told me this previously and I still don't know what that means. Could this be conected to my weight loss? Anyway I have been told I need to go for another blood test for Liver function in early March so will get it sorted out then I hope. :(
