Do you have to get starchy carbs from wholegrains or can you eat starchy veg duch as peas, instead? I do not want to eat bread and rice. Losing weight and feeling good on a diet without too much grainy food.

All digestible carbohydrates come from plants. Modern plant varieties have been selectively bred to increase their starch yield. The traditional grains that we eat are all in the 70% to 80% starch range. Quinoa is lower at about 55%. I haven't looked up the more exotic ones.
Root vegetables also contain carbohydrates. That's potatoes and parsnips ANd carrots [which contain sugars.]
some vegetable which look like roots are not and don't contain much carb eg Kohl Rabi and celeriac. In both these the "bulb" is a swollen stem.
Pulses peas, beans and lentils contain carbs, but less than grains. Nuts and seeds also contain varied amounts of digestible starch.
you need a reference book.
Why do you want to eat starchy carbs? the termis a scientific nonsense anyway. The name carbohydrate refers to a large class of organic chemical compounds made up of carbon , hydrogen and oxygen. some of the subcategories of carbohydrates are;- sugars, starches, inulin, cellulose. some are digestible, some not and some raise blood glucose [a carbohydrate] if you eat them.
Thus breakfast cereals ARE NOT carbs. they are foodstuffs which contain carbs.
My very precise chemistry professor of the late 1960s would be proud of me. He insisted on accuracy and precision in using scientific terms.

As Handar says, why are you looking for starchy carbs as in general they are best avoided by diabetics? The word 'starchy' is misleading in addition to the carbohydrate aspect that Handra highlights. 'Starchy' carbs have different properties depending on whether you start with the whole grain or the end product of highly refined white flour. If you want to have some carbs in your diet then go for the ones nearest to whole grain end as they are lower-GI. Beans and pulses are good if not heavily cooked.

Well tell that to the NHS. I was told that ALL diabetics need to eat starchy carbs with EVERY meal and they throw up bread, pasta, cereals and rice as perfect examples. It is on Diabetes Uk website too. I DO NOT want to eat starchy carbs in thecquantitirs recommended which is ehy I asked if I can get away from the usual suspects. I love winter veggies like parsnips and swede and I will never give up on my beloved carrots so maybe stew is back on the menu. I wish the NHS would stop trlling us, diabetics of all people, that we should love our starchy carbs. It is not like I am on any meds. My body would not thank me for it. Have lost a much needed 8kg on low carbs so I am happy as I have a lot to lose. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Hi. You have discovered what many of us have discovered a while back that both the NHS and DUK thru bad diet advice seem determined to make our diabetes worse; amazing. Fortunately many of us know better and are well aware that controlling carbs is a vital part of our treatment
