I'm so nervous. my 7 year old daughter starts her insulin pump tomorrow.
We've gone for the accu check insight.
Hoping it will stable her blood sugars.
I would be extremely grateful for any tips anyone has.

Get the basal rates right first, I cant stress that enough. Buy two books 'pumping insulin' and 'think like a pancreas'. If you live in the UK bookdepository could get them to you quickly. Knowledge is truly power and those books will give you everything you will need to make your daughters insulin pump a success.

This post probably doesn't sound helpful but once you read those books and have them sitting there to reference you will thank yourself for the effort.

Hi @u1167189 - Great news about the pump. I think the Insight is fab. My hba1c has improved & I have far less hypos. I agree about the book 'pumping insulin' . Good luck & keep us posted.

Hi, started mine last week, loving it so far!
I use the libre, along with the insight, I don't know if you use it for your daughter already, so I'll not bang on a bout in case you do, apart from to say it's invaluable when getting the basal right.

The cannula is very gentle, (for less of a sting than the libre) insulin seems much more effective and I need less on a pump than on MDI, I think that's the case for many.

There are 7 official Accu Chek insight videos on YouTube, I watched them this morning to just refresh myself before changing the infusion set and cannula.

The quick start guides which come with the pump are very useful too.

I'm on a flat rate basal for now until we have a week of data, so I've still lots to learn re adjusting it etc, but I'm getting on just fine.

Good luck

Others have given tips about the medical side of the pump (sorting out basal, etc.). Don't forget about the mental side.
Your daughter may have already experienced the awkwardness of being different and having to inject at school. She won't have to do that: instead she will have to wear a "pager" at all times which is likely to make her stand out. So my advice would be to make it something positive such as giving her the chance to chose some insulin pouches to go with different outfits. Yes, it is another expense but they are not excessive and there are plenty of options on eBay.
Also, I'd make sure her teachers (especially those associated with sports) are aware of what it is and that it shouldn't be removed.

Hi there @u1167189
welcome to the forum !! :)
that is great news on your daughter getting a pump !.
Completely agree with getting the book "Pumping Insulin".

your daughter's Diabetic Nurse will likely be in pretty constant communication to start with - do use her as much as you need to -- that is what she is paid to do -- assist people and parents of children with D !!

try to think of it as a marathon race as well -- everything won't happen miraculously over night -- adjustments to getting all the settings exactly right for your daughter will take a bit of time.
( it took me about 4-6 weeks to get all mine sorted but the hard work has paid off for me with much more stable readings )

do keep posting on here to keep us all updated !!

all the best !!

How long has she been diabetic before this? What sort of experience do you have?

I would say be confident in whatever experience that you do have. Trust yourself and trust your daughter and her feelings. I'm not one to say buy books. I'm more take notes and feel things. You will find your own way. Trust your clinic and your nurse. You won't bug your nurse by phoning too many times so don't get that bother you. Be open minded. Don't be afraid to fail or see her have high levels or low ones. We are all different. You will find her way, but we're here if you have questions. Good luck <3
