I’ve recently started low carb a few days ago.

Since then I’ve noticed my bs being higher in the morning.

Did anyone else have this happen. I have also had more migraines.

How much are we talking? In terms of the time since you started, the amount of carb lowering and the bg rise.

headaches are sometimes caused by going very low and actually it’s the “sugar” withdrawal” or the lack of electrolytes. Check you have plenty of fluid on board, potassiu, magnesium and sodium going in in some form or another. Magnesium is good for migraine generally anyway.

a small brief rise might be explained by your liver thinking it’s being deprived of its accustomed glucose levels and is dumping glucose to bring it back up to what it expects levels to be. Whilst concerning its a good thing. Draining the swamp (liver) of excess stored glucose. It’ll recalibrate to better levels soon and be better off for it.

I'd agree with the first two posters.

Our body has a few tricks when it thinks we're in danger, imho

Cut off or changing the food supply in some way , is one of those that puts it into survival mode

A state where it artificially creates or raises levels to where IT thinks they should be.

Once it realises, the current state is deliberate or sustainable, it slowly drops it guard to match that level

Kind of makes sense.

It guards us to protects itself.

Then when it realises we're safe ..it drops its limits to where we currently are, but stays alert for any further changes.

Each level is a step change for it, and thay doesn't always synchronise with out current intake .

I found personally each mornings BG, dropped a point over a month, when I first started out.

As in Jan i started at 10....then more and more as the month passed it dropped closer to 9.
And of course at Feb it started at 9, by the end it was more 8's and so on, as each month it progressed downwards.

As for feelings,...I got very foggy Minded & out of it, but I never suffered headaches as such.

Maybe @Goonergal could shed some light.?

I believe she suffered many migraines pre diet, but the low carb & high fat diet helped her enormously.

Good luck on your journey

Hi @Tansolo and thanks for the tag @jjraak

On your first question, you might find this article helpful: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/fasting-blood-glucose-higher

On your second, on diagnosis I had chronic migraines and was treating 6-8 a month. Initially they got worse, but then vanished - haven’t had one in over five years now. That’s been by far the best side effect of a ketogenic way of eating for me in terms of my quality of life.

Knowing what I know now, I suspect the initial increase was due to a combination of sugar/carb withdrawal and not taking in enough salt/electrolytes. I’d have a look at the latter to see if it helps you. And hang in there!
