Starting up with the forum

I had a problem starting for the first time. I had to invite a participant but didn't know anyone. I tried entering that but it wouldn't work so I put in the only name I could find looking around and out in Giverny. I guess others have had this problem or I am an untechnical idiot and am the only one who can't figure out what to do !!!
