statins

They can be, depends on many factors and your metabolic markers.

Personally having read and researched extensively I would not take them unless I'd had a heart attack, stroke etc.... But remember I am not a doctor.

Research easily found from a quick Google search will point you to numerous side effects including but not limited to:

- diabetes
- cardio vascular
- kidney prob
- liver probs
- cramps

Etc

:)

I am currently in the process of weaning myself off these. I was initially put 80mg Simvastatin as the gp said all diabetics should be on them plus a history of high cholesterol and heart problems in the family.

Last year my dn cut these down to 40mg and I had much less leg pain. I am now cutting that pill in half - 20mg

Hi. Yes, they do increase blood sugar so you need to add it to the pot of Pros and Cons. Google the web and make the decision as to whether they are good or bad for you.

The following example is only a sample size of one, but is backed up by studies and listed as a side effect on the blurb that comes with statins. My mum has significant and permanent muscle weakness, so bad that she had to have a bath lift installed as she could no longer get out because her arms aren't strong enough and changed cars to get really good power steering. This on its own would put me off, plus the limited evidence that it's any use (particularly for women).

I eventually stopped taking simvastatins last autumn and saw a definite drop in my glucose levels, but have seen no real difference to my cholesterol levels.

Do a search of the forum as there was a long running poll a while back about the side effects people may or may not have when taking statins.

Make an informed choice, and don't be pushed into taking them "just because"...
