Statins

Hi 12 months ago i had a hbac1 of 51 i refused metoformun that nurse was insistent i took. I brought that down to 36 within 3 months on a LFLC Diet and it did raise to mid 40s last September but i paid for my own test last week and its back down to 37 so was well chuffed I think raise was due to holidays and drinks etc Now today a letter from Dr arrives with a perscription to start on statins? Ive nefer had a cholesterol test done and feel is just a paper exercise as saying data shows i am diabetic and to avoid heart probs need to take enclosed prescription. I looked up statins and alarmingly read can cause type 2 in pre diabetic people and raised blood readings. I am nor happt taking this med as what readon is it based on. There are no heart issues in family and i was told i am pre diabetic now in my Sept review not diabetic so records not updated perhsps? Has anyone had anything similar I will ring them tomorrow but feeling confused Are statins issued without blood tests?

Personally I would never start a new medication without having a proper conversation with the Dr and also having a blood test so I could make an informed decision as to whether the benefits out way the potential side effects. And remember it’s your body, Health Care Professionals are there to advise not dictate.

Thanks to both of your replies I went saw dr in person she said ok if dont want to take only given as precaution I told her of my recent hbac1 readings and more less agreed no problem if didnt take but here if wanted to in future so pleased i persued it and saved nhs in unnecessary perscription

Unnecessary and a bit of a "tick box" exercise for doctors whose surgeries get extra funding the more people they get onto statins unfortunately.
