Still confused...

To much to say.
I have had Type 2 now for 7 weeks,and I am still confused about my readings...As soon as I wake up at 7.30 in the morning I test,and I am normally in the range between 7.6 then sometimes in the 8.2... How long does it take for BS levels to return to what's classed as normal,is it still to early for me to be looking at the 5-6 level,I was 10 when told I have Diabetes,I am eating lots of veg,meat,and other bits from the low carb section,I just need to know if my BS is ok,I woke this morning at it was 10+ , I have my Desmond clinic on the 17 th of June,I excersice daily,I have giving up smoking for the past 2 weeks +,and today I am feeling like this is all getting to me once again,will my BS stay down if I keep eating the right stuff,I had some weight watchers cookies yesterday,I think that is what made my sugar be high this morning, I wasnt 10+ I was 11+ this morning,sorry for the confusion,feeling very emotional today...xox
 
Hi Rosemary, I was diagnosed last November and my BS levels didn't come down quickly, also if they come down too quick it can make you feel unwell. I'm sure you will reach the 5-6 level if you stick to your low carb diet and lose weight (if you need to). Also, you have just given up smoking and that causes stress which can affect our BS levels. You have one up on me there as I haven't been able to stop yet! I don't know what is in Weight Watchers cookies as I've never had them, but there may be wheat, and if that affects you it could have been them. I am usually in the 4-5-6s now, with the odd spike when I try something new, but it's taken time plus losing 3 stones too get there. I think the psychological effect of being diagnosed can affect some of us too, stresswise, and thinking of the journey we have in front of us can be daunting.

Maybe do something nice for yourself today:). I had 2 new books arrived this morning (it doesn't have to involve eating!) and am looking forward to starting them. I think doing something pleasurable can de-stress us.

Oh thanks for your reply Beshile,maybe am expecting to much,I won't be eating them cookies again,just not worth it...The non smoking is fine untill I hit a bit of stress,am chewing a way on my inhalator lol,my friend gave me a book the other day,so I will start on that...Thanks again for your reply,and yes I am getting a bit obsessive about complications,I don't know why as I have none at the mo,am just really scared and freaked out at the moment...xox
 
Ah, Rosemary, I - same as Beshlie - wish I were up there with you with regard to smoking (sad face from me) - and well done!

And on the subject of cookies: My ex recently brought me some 'sugarfree' cookies - thought they might be just the thing for me (didn't like them himself) - and lo and behold: when I looked at the label, they were 50 g of carbs for 100 g ...

Rosemary, slow but steady does it. You will come down eventually - things take time - and as I will usually say: this is not a sprint but a marathon. - And I would suggest that your mantra from now on should be: always read the labels to see carb contents ...

Hi. What is your current weight like? Don't worry too much about morning fasting tests due to the Dawn Phenomenon but test 2 hours after a meal and occasionally just before as well to see how food affects you. I would avoid Weight watchers food as some of it is not good for diabetics (or anyone even?). Just have low-carbs and a sensible mix of proteins, fats and veg etc and sensible overall portion sizes. If you can keep at it with the right diet you should see both weight and blood sugar come down but it may take many weeks. Think of the diet as a life-time change and gradually find things that you like including fats which are not a problem for us as long as the carbs are kept down
 
Thanks everyone,I am on 1000gms of Metformin a day,my weight is 9 stone 10lbs...I have lost over two stone in the past 2years,I eat lots of veg,Cauliflower,Brockley,Sprouts,and Chicken,Steak,Cheese,Sausage,Mushrooms...I have cut Rice,Pasta,Potatoes completely from my diet,I eat a small slice of brown bread every other day when I have a fry up...I use Canderal sweetener in my coffee and tea,I eat berries and fresh cream,I can't eat nuts as I have no teeth,getting my dentures in a few weeks,this is my diet that I am on,I also love fish and eat that twice a week,is this enough carbs,thanks once again everyone,I think I am on the road with diabetes,then one day every so often I wake up and feel like I don't know my self no more...and yes I must remember to look at the carbs as well as the sugar,I eat Greek yougart full fat,I have been looking for flax seed as I need it to make bread but can't find it any where,I also have 2 squares of dark chocolate when am feeling like something sweet,and make the sugar free jelly...Can I eat as much veg as I want...xox Jack,I am going to look at the Atkins now,thank you...
 
it sounds like you are doing everything right
if you are already doing something similar to the hard core atkins induction and it doesn't drop your BG to a level you are happy with. it may be time to increase and add another med with the metformin,
my first choice would be more metformin, the dr should ok 3 or maybe 4 x500 metformin a day, normal met can be 2500 a day, slow release is 2000 a day
metformin reaches max effect after 3 months
from what I have read, better long term outcomes are achieved by moving onto meds as required and not holding back.
 
Thanks Jack,I have appointment to have my BS tested again in about 5 weeks time,so I shall give it untill then and see if I can get them down more...I think if am honest with my self,I need to add more excersice back into my life,I have let that slip bait although I do walk a small bit every day,I need to get back on my bike and get around the park a few times...Infact it is such a beautiful day,I think I will go for a ride now...xox
 
Hi Rosemary, the good news is that if you continue to eat well, your blood sugars should stabilise. The likelihood is that you have become very insulin resistant before being diagnosed. This is temporary, and will reverse over time as your body reacts to your improved diet. The metformin will help as well, but this is a marathon and not a sprint. Our bodies can adjust to lots of things, but it does take time.
Increasing your exercise is a great idea too, as that's probably one of the quickest ways to increase your sensitivity to insulin.
 
Thank you Charles,I never knew that...I just tested again and my sugar is 9.2 ,as I said it is normally between 7.6 and 8.6,do I wait for it to go down to 7 again before I can eat,am hungry but to scared to eat in case it rises even higher...xox
 
i was getting great numbers all day after a while, but not in the morning, boooooooo, i stopped testing in the mornings as i decided i couldn't do anything about it so what was the point in worrying about it and starting the day off on a sour note, my first test was always after id eaten brekkie (2hr) i have since randomly tested first thing and it has come down to the 4s & 5s but even now i get the occasional higher number, keep doing what your doing, I'm sure you will get where you want to be eventually :) your doing great!
 
Do you mind if I ask old you are and whether your BMI is good as your weight seems pretty good. The reason I ask is that if you are down to a 'normal' weight, low-carbing as you are but the blood sugar is still elevated then it is worth bearing in mind the possibly of being a Late onset T1 rather than T2. Quite a few of us have been down that route and if you do hit a brick wall despite keeping the carbs way down then do discuss tests for LADA with the GP and come back with more questions. BTW, apart from the carbs, have as much of anything else as you like as other foods only have small effect on blood sugar.
 
I would like to bet part of it is down to stress. Even stress you don't know is there. You are currently stressing about your levels, and when you are about to test you are probably through the roof with stress. This makes such a difference to levels. Your diet etc seems absolutely fine. You are doing all the right things.

Congratulations on stopping smoking. One of these days I will join you, meanwhile .....
 
Bluetit is right about stress. This week I couldn't sleep for 2 nights as both of my dogs had stomach upsets so I had to stay up with them, which was stressful as I needed sleep so bad. The following days I had BS levels of 8.1 and 8.4 which is high for me. Last night was a good one and my levels are back in the 4s 5s and one 6.1 after tea. I'm not sure why this happens but I've proved it does! Stress come in many forms.
 
Thanks everyone for all your replies,yes I was under stress the past week,plus giving up smoking although I have had a naughty smoke today while out at hospital with my daughter,am glad I am eating the right things but I don't like the comment it might be on set of type 1...I think I will keep doing as am doing untill my next blood test in 5 weeks,and thanks Jack,am not so scared about my numbers now you have said that about the 10-12...xox
 
the diabetic mob, recommend T1 kids to run at <10, so I think you will be fine for a couple of months till you can work out your BG and meds
 
I'd agree too about stress - and would include ill health - I was doing well until I got a run of (only minor) ill health but my glucose readings went up higher than when I started off, and I got a little stressed, and ended up in a bit of a vicious circle. After three months of this I'm starting to see my readings coming down again, . but it's been a very frustrating time...

So just keep at it, you know you're doing everything right which is the main thing!
