Last night Had large rag pudding (beef pudding) with lots of veg to get some compatitive readings and expected possible double figures . Before eating 6.4 two hours after 7.4 and three hours after 5.4 does that mean i tolerate suet pastry ? 5 weeks in now and made big changes to my diet and now down to a midges over 18 stone ,Thats a 1 stone loss in 5 weeks and meter readings more often than not reasonable .

That is hard to say but those numbers at 2 hours are not that bad. However, it would be nice to see the 1 hour and 90 min as well to see what the peak is. Additionally, your before eating is a little increased so still some room to improve there. This may/will happen as you lose more weight and well done so far.

The rule I go by is eat to your meter.
However, you may get a rogue reading, the only way you know is to have it again and see what the results are then. Only after a few times will you really see what effects certain foods have on you.

Looks like you can tolerate a little pastry. Keep an eye on the meter though - sort of thing that's worth double checking.
Well done on the weight loss. Keep going.
Best wishes
Adam

Yes, what matters is how high the spike was, so test at 1h to know that. It's good and healthy that you're coming down, but you don't want a high spike.

Good work Dave

Agree with all the advice but that weight loss is great ..... keep it going. Diet's one thing (and critical) but losing those pounds is another

Mike :)

Heading in the right direction, well done, especially on the weight loss.

A recipe for rag pudding with 16oz of meat (453gms) also had 16 0z flour (453 gms and therefore 300 gms carbs, if my sums a right). You didn't eat all of it did you? Sorry, none of my business really, although you did say a big bit. Vegetables are usually not too bad unless you're really counting every single gram, there's a useful list here:-

It seems that we all tolerate different types of carb to varying degrees and at the end of the day, you have to decide for yourself, what's a good level to go for you and that's why you use your meter. As we've seen on our little straw poll, some go as low as 30gms and some people are happy with 150gms. I'm now starting to read articles that suggest between 50gms and 100gms being good, rather than the 250gms to 300 gms on the eatwell plate.

I am a bit confused as i gave some figures last week and someone suggested the 1 hour figure wasnt that relative it was the 2 hr figure that gave a more realistic figure so thats the reason for giving 2 hr and 3 hr . I have trouble retaining information so info can be a bit fuzzled at times . I will have to try and get a better understanding of the testing method.

still experimenting using up some stocks of grub Cheese and onion pie but very thin pastry + various veg . Before was 7.5 and cant understand why so high 1 hr 9.2 90 mins 9.8 and 2 hours = 9.6 so it looks like the pie is a no no

wonder if readings have any relation to physical state - as i feel quite awful today with fuzzy head and aches in legs

Could well be. You could lay off the experiments with high carb stuff and see what happens.

It's the pastry that is spiking you. 2hrs is recommended, but as you are on trial and error stage, you will out more experimenting. Make sure you're recording all your results so that you have a visual record of what types of food does to your blood glucose levels.

Yep, the pastry could well be the culprit.

Sirloin steak with cabbage and sprouts - Before 5.9 after 1 hr 9.2 after 90mins 7.0 Strange that the 1 hr reading was the same as after eating cheese and onion pie. is a jump from 5.9 to 9.2 not a lot considering the foods should be fairly safe or is it good that from a peak of 9.2 a further 30 mins saw it drop to 7.0

If I'm checking food eat, if the 1hr or 90min reading is above 3 of the b4 reading I then avoid that item or have less of next time.
The higher reading go towards your 3 monthly hbA1c aswell as the lower readings, so the few higher the lower your average will be, well that's my understanding of it anyway, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I love staeak and kidney puddings and tolerate them well.

suet
ˈs(j)uːɪt/
noun
noun: suet
the hard white fat on the kidneys and loins of cattle, sheep, and other animals, used to make foods such as puddings, pastry, and mincemeat.

I think it's the fat that makes it ok.

That was my thinking re the suet pastry so its a good find as its very filling and makes up a bit for the loss of pies/pastry.It can be filled with all manner of things again to give good variety and be filling.,not sure if apples will be suitable but there must be some fruits that are tolerated by some folks.

and yes i take statins another much argued subject - should you or shouldnt you that is the question.
