Still in remission after 10 years

I still browse the forum and occasionally make the odd contribution or two and thought I'd post my latest result.

I was diagnosed in 2012 with an hba1c of 48 and put onto statins because 'all diabetics should take statins' and I knew no different at the time. Within 6 months my hba1c had gone up to 54 which prompted a telling off from my DN for not sticking to the 'eat well' diet. When I mentioned to her that there was a possible correlation between statins and increased blood sugars I was told not to believe everything I read in the Daily Mail and her face was a picture when I told her it came from the statin manufacturers own website! Due to other side effects I came off the statins soon after and within 6 months my hba1c was down to pre diabatic levels and by August 2014 normal levels ie 40. I had also found this forum and ditched the so called healthy foods ie low fat everything, brown bread, rice, pasta and jacket potatoes etc in favour of full fat greek yoghurt and milk, cheese, cream, low carb bread etc and having approx 130g carbs per day - which I appreciate is still too high for many on this forum but for me it works.

I was a little concerned about this years hba1c because I have retired early and my OH is now a pensioner and had to give up his PT Job due to illness last November so my diet has not been as good as I'd have liked particularly as he likes my home made fruit cake which I would occasionally have a slice of as well. However I have found recipes for ginger and lemon cakes and chocolate brownies made with Almond and Coconut flour which freeze well and, according to my trusty tester, don't affect my BS too much.

So it was with some intrepidation that I looked up my hba1c result last night but was relieved and pleased that it was 40 - not as low I'd like but still normal!

Hopefully this will help people with T2 realise that it can be done and remission can be achieved with the correct information. In fact the nurse who took my blood and checked by feet etc had just been diagnosed with pre diabetes and we had a chat as to how I had managed to get mine down - she'd been advised to have weetabix for breakfast and eat brown bread etc so I quickly appraised her of what that might do to her BS! I think I convinced her to try a different breakfast and use her monitor to her advantage. I also told her that the 'eat well' plate might be healthy for most people but not for diabetics.

Well done, @Daphne917 10yrs remission is a great story of success.

My GP and DN both said that I'm unique in their practice for being in remission. They claim no other patient of their's could stick to Low Carb long enough to get into remission. I replied that since all the patients see is low fat and 'Eatwell' it isn't surprising that either they don't try, or don't stick with low carb!

I hope that your nurse becomes a new convert and can help get the word out to other T2's patient of your GP.
