Er, I have developed bad odour :(

I know it's due to the low carb diet. I also understand it's due to too much protein - re Jenny Ruhl Diet 101.

My question is in two parts:

What's the strongest antiperspirant/body spray around :)

How long does it take before the smellies dissipate if I cut down protein? The db clinic said there were ketones in my wee (yay)

To be honest I don't even know how much protein I should be eating - it's clearly too much. I tried to get my head around Jenny's calculations, but sort of gave up.

I'm 17st 7 at the moment - my protein is generally meat - chicken, ham, sausages and cheese and some above ground veg. (Oh and jelly, strawbs and cream - yuhhm)

Any advice would be doing my wife, friends and colleagues a great favour.

You mentioned metformin on another thread, this is known to cause a stink!

Interesting. I have just restarted my mets and it coincides. Mind I never had an issue when I was on them before (3000mg just two months ago - I know huge amount)

However, maybe my wonky liver is reacting in a different way on the low carb diet. More research needed.

Ahh just found a protein calculator on Jenny's site
http://www.phlaunt.com/lowcarb/DietMakeupCalc.php
It says (for me)
Required Protein Intake: 92 grams of high quality protein.
This would be supplied by: 15.3 ounces or 429 grams of a high quality protein food like meat, fish, eggs, or cheese, which typically contain 6 grams of protein.
(This for 100g of carbs a day - I think I'm under that, but not certain, just started using myfitnesspal)

Ok, so am I going to be the one who asks...?
Cowards, the lot of you!!!

So, gfmoore, please describe this stinkiness?

I ask because when Mr B went into ketosis he whiffed of something sweet, almost peardroppy and odd. But he didn't stink. The smell was on his breath, and then much weaker on his skin.

Ketosis doesn't do that to me, because I'm a girl, and girls can't stink. Well known fact. Plus it says so in the manual.

I've checked this fact with Mr B and he agrees, totally, because he has to.

The peardrop smell is a more common side effect of ketosis than B.O, that's for sure!

Maybe try reducing your protein intake a little, and drink plenty of water. I can't stress enough how important it is to stay hydrated on a low carb/ketogenic diet.

I wish I could find the words!! It is a really bad BO smell. Seems to originate with sweat areas. Today it's not been as bad, but not so stressed as yesterday.

I like the metformin idea and I have seen that a few people have had awful episodes with it. My ketones level is only just at the lower end, so thining perhaps not that.

New experiment is to restart the omeprazole (which is a zantac type acid inhibiter). i took these as a matter of course when previously on Metformin, but haven't on my new regime.

Uhmmm, yes my fluid intake is low, okay then.

What is recommended fluid intake for sedentary lifestyle?

A lot more than you think - you are 17 odd stone, yes (or did I get that completely wrong?)

Try aiming for 3.5 litres minimum, and see how you feel.

There are complicated calculators on the web, if you want to look it up, but having looked at them, I came away with the rough idea that it should be a min of 1 litre per 5 stone body weight - and that so the goal I set myself.

And when I hit it for a couple of days, I feel... better somehow. Hard to describe. May be psychosomatic, of course. Half the health info on the web is gumph. ;)

Thanks guys,

I just noticed this as well on the BBC web site http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z8899j6

Makes me laugh (or get annoyed). Statements made with no backup or references, Say anything you like, it's the bbc so must be true.
(And I downloaded the Chef's pdf -don't know why I bothered, must be getting short of loo paper)

Just thinking 3.5 litres is a huge amount. I probably drink just 3 pints of fluid a day. (never thought about it). Okay I'll up my intake. (My wee looks okay, light straw colour so figured okay)

Sorry for any lurkers who are probably thinking: "Too much information"! he he.

Hi odour ban is very good difficult to get hold of I last got it at a chiropodist it sting and itches and you have to follow the instructions but I found its brilliant I used to have big wet patches under arms not at all ladylike and had to be carefully of what I could wear keeping cardigans on in heat waves etc sorry for waffle but its good stuff

Depending on which country you are from there is a product called Driclor an antiperspirant roll on put it on at night and no sweat for 3 days I have used this many times. I am based in UK.

*nodding understandingly*

That may have happened to me, once or twice...

But for you, as a female mouse, smelling of fish has got to be a double doom if there are cats around!
