Hi

Has anybody who has been on any make of pump had to have investigations due to stomach problems?

I saw a bowel HCP in last month- who indicated that insulin pumps (although no official reports or investigations were told to me) seemed to be a factor in diabetics having bowel probs...

Has anybody else ever heard of this? Has anybody else experienced newly noticed bowel or stomach problems?

I was really suprised, and thought I am just unlucky.. But there was a definite indication from the bowel HCP that both the human insulin I have been on constantly and the pump were making diabetics more liable to bowel problems.

Has anybody else ever heard of such indications? Or experienced them? I was also informed that the pump was the best thing to manage my 'D'.

Dont wish to be alarming at all, just would like to hear from anybody else thats had investigations, and where the HCP may have gained this conception of bowels/stomach probs for us...

Since posting this question... Have now had a barium enema done and waiting results...

Perhaps pumps n insulin and bowel probs aren't so prevalent as my bowel surgeon made out to me...
I don't think I can be the only person that is on insulin and additionally placed on a pump that is having to seek investigations for a change in bowel patterns/state.

I hope that somebody else as well as me has experieced and come through any such changes....

At moment.. i am swinging through hundreds of thoughts waiting for my results....

1) never thought I wld get to 50...... 50 next year..almost there....because diabetic nurse when diagnosed told me i WOULD get complications.... NOT .... I MAY get complications...
2) crackpot podiatrist ..... Told me she thought I chose 5 diseases to have to learn...lessons from past life to this one to next one... This may be no ..4...but.. Is 5 my last..
3) all a load of rubbish thoughts...

This last bowel probs has really been more significant than any other thing I ever had.. ...

The initial problems have been undignified..
So have the investigations.. They aren't nice..
Hoping results may be better..

If anybody has experience of probs.. I wld be so grateful to know how your thoughts helped you cope..your experiences and outcomes.. I have a week to wait and trying to be positive..

Not asking forany deliberations on insulin/pumps being causes... Now hoping how to find to cope with waiting for one week waiting for results!!!

DDx

Apparently there is a link between diabetes and coeliac disease. If you are having a barium enema they must have already excluded that. Cant see how the pump could cause it.

I had never thought of any probs between stomach/bowel/insulin/diabetes previously.

Just came about from comments that bowel surgeon made.

Waiting till Friday now for the results from barium enema.. Definitely, NOT anexperience I would have willingly had.. Only as a necessity!!!

Had heard of all sorts of other complications that diabetes can contribute towards.. Never stomach or bowel... And not insulin or pumps... Just find the comments made to me intersting and hoping that nobody else has had any'link' or for the future either.

There is a stomach condition called gastroparesis that can be a complication of diabetes (though it can have other causes too) where stomach emptying is delayed due to nerve damage to the nerve that supplies the stomach.

Not heard of any link between pumps/insulin and any GI issues though, except perhaps that as with any complication getting better control can help and so maybe more people with complications use pumps to try and improve control and prevent further complications, so it appears as though more people on pumps have problems but there is no real causal relationship.
