hello
I started low carbing in earnest one week ago. My evening bg readings have dropped dramatically from somewhere between 7.5 and 8.5 to a pleasing 5.7 (last night at midnight when I retired.)
However, my morning readings are still much higher than I would like, so last night I tested my blood every time I got up to go to the bathroom.
Midnight: 5.7
2.15 am 6.3
4.15 am 6.9
7am 7.7 (had really bad headache so took paracaetamol and went back to bed)
9.30 am 7.3

I have heard of the dawn effect, but my blood glucose seems to rise gradually all night. Also, I am eating very low carbs all day and evening, last night's meal was chicken wrapped in bacon with melted cheese, half a carrot and spinach followed by a handful of blueberries, 3 strawberries and a tablespoon of full fat crème fraiche. However I did not get home from work until 8.30 pm so I eat late.

Is what is happening to me typical? I really want my morning readings to come down

I'd be interested to know the answer to that one too
Which form of Diabetes do you have ? ...

Strange then ! If it only happens in the morning, you can either go for a walk in the evening to try to lower BG levels prior to bed or depending on your schedule, try to do a little cardio first thing to rectify the slight high. The numbers may be a little higher than you'd like but it seems your overall control is pretty good. Sorry I can't really help :-)

Thanx - I do work out twice a week at the gymn (my husband has heart disease so we're trying really hard to get fit) as well as doing one three mile walk a week and walking dogs daily, anything from 20 mins to an hour. Been going to gymn since last year........
I cannot understand why the bg goes up gradually all night though. I thought that the liver released glycogen in the morning to give the body energy to get up! having an Hba1C test on Tuesday next so will be interested to see the result.
