Strange experience with Diabetes?

There really is an incredible variety of experience for both T2 and T1 diabetics, not to mention the rarer types. It is definitely not a one size fits all illness.

Hi there
I'm diabetic type1 on insulin.
I am pregnant and have been controlling my diabetes the best I can.
My sugars are 5,6 I have had some around 15 but got them back down. I've started bleeding I am only 5 weeks gone just wondered if anyone else has experiences this and gone on to have a healthy baby ?

I am type 2 diabetic and when I got pregnant I also bled at the same time you did. Midwife said it was my placenta attaching to the womb but if you're worried about it go to the doctors.

I was consultant led and only saw midwife once and then I saw diabetic pregnancy consultant, diabetic nurse and another consultant every four weeks and was closely monitored to ensure I had a healthy pregnancy.

My son was born by c section (due to being breech) on January 3rd 2013 and was 7lb 10oz which they said was a brilliant weight but they had told me he would be 10lb plus as I am diabetic but that wasn't the case.

My son is now 16 months old and fantastic, walking talking and everything he should be doing.

Take care and see that doctor if ever you worried about anything.

ok thanks so much. It's reassuring. I lost one at 6 weeks last time so really scared this time. Trying to stay positive. If you don't mind me asking was it a lot of blood ? Mine is not as heavy as a period but a still red and a bit heavy. Thank you

Diabetes doesn't have to be that hard to live with honey as long as you keep it under control. You can live a perfectly normal life.

If you start to feel like you have no reason to live speak to your family, friends or doctor or all of them as you may have a touch of depression which is common with diabetes.

At your age you have everything to live for and should be enjoying life and not feeling the way that you do.

Please make sure you keep an eye on how you feel and if ever you feel that low again please speak to your doctor and your family or a close friend. Sometimes just having someone to listen can often be the answer to first step treatment of depression.

Chin up honey and try and remain positive. Xxx

I'm not depressed at all just concerned . I've had diabetes 15 years and it is controlled hense why I'm concerned about the bleeding. Thanks

I've been T1 since I was 8.. My teen years are long behind me back in the days before mobiles & internet.. But I know what you are saying..

This looks like your first post? If you don't mind me saying, try talking to the guys in the "teen section"? Open your own thread & introduce yourself?
How you feel is real to you. As it was to me back in the "olden days".. Even going "Goth"..? I think you guys call it Emo now...? Lol

But life has a funny way of turning around.. I'm just glad I didn't do anything too stupid before it did..

Yes I can't get any diabetes care and am having hypos hypers being violently sick and the diabetes team at my local hospital in Llanelli keep cancelling my appointments so I am having no diabetes care, now I was having pins and needles in my feet and stabbing pains now my toes are numb and I am losing balance the treatment in Carmarthenshire is disgraceful and I feel let down and they even ignored my Gp writing to them a couple of weeks ago!! Life is **** they have ignored my phone calls and when I was at the hospital for another appoint with a different dept I called into the diabetes centre and the nurse told me this isn't a drop in centre it has to be appointments only to which I replied, I have had my appoint cancelled time and time again, have called left messages spoken to Sylvia the receptionist and no one has answered me, it's disgraceful and I am getting worse because I have no help at all for my diabetes went to one of my GP's and was told because I am on insulin the hospital has to see to me they won't help me what the hell am I supposed to do?

There is more information available to you on these forum than you could find in 3 clinics full of consultants.
And I have been amazed at how helpful everyone is, too.

Why don't you start a few threads? Maybe one to introduce yourself, and then one or two asking questions that are worrying you. Try and give as much information as possible - what your symptoms are, and your blood glucose levels, what you are eating, how much medication, and when you take it, your age, health problems...

People will give you masses of support and advice, some of which you may find very helpful.

I once ate a whole bag of chocolate buttons (can I add that I was 8 months pregnant and wouldn't do this normally) and my blood sugar was brilliant but after eating just two weetabix my blood sugar was 14.3.....

Anyone got any explanations???

I would like to offer my story. Diagnosed T2 five years ago. Put on metformin to counteract high blood sugars . Told to change my diet, the usual. Thought I had it control then two years ago, I started having hypos, bad sleeps, and feeling tired, grumpy, angry, sweaty and having all the classic hypo symptoms. The first time my gp took me off the metformin and told me to watch my bloods.
I still had symptoms of hypos but the doctor wouldn't believe that my symptoms were unusual.
It wasn't until I had a hypo in her office that she thought something was amiss.
It took another three specialist visits, and a strict low carb no sugar diet and now I'm going into hospital for more tests, that I have now been diagnosed with a condition called reactive hypoglycemia.
It has took a lot of unnecessary time and trying to persuade certain health people that diabetes is is such a diverse condition.
I have for breakfast, porridge with a cuppa no milk no sugar. Mid morning low gi bread, banana, cuppa. Lunch bowl of soup, afternoon, Apple and couple of digestive, main meal, meat and salad. Supper something like beans with ham. This is all I have and I have to keep my bsl between 4 & 7.
I only have one diet coke a day after my main meal.
I have discovered quite a lot about my condition especially recovering from hypoglycemia attacks. A gradual low carb answer is a better alternative than the high sugar ones usually prescribed. I was given a bottle of lucosade after a test to get my bsl levels back, however I immediately went back into a hypo and spent another three hours in the hospital.
Hopefully I can get the right medication to help with my condition.
My specialist admitted that I have a condition that has only been recognised and some older endocrinologist insist that it is not a 'condition'.

I am starting to understand that reactive hypoglycemia is part of the 'spectrum' of diabetes-related conditions. It kind of makes sense that my mum has autoimmune arthritis, my dad has total gluten intolerance, his aunt had coeliac disease, and my sister has reactive hypoglycemia. And of course when they asked me at diagnosis, does diabetes run in your family, I said "No". :-/
