Fab question @KetoAnnieJust checking - can blood glucose still be raised at midday from dawn phenomenon?
For me, it will stop with three almonds. What kind of thing does it stop with? Is fat sufficient or do you find you need protein?
If I have too much protein I get high readings and if I have too much fat and obviously if I don't work out I clap weight on. I find if I eat a few walnuts its stops it but I will be hungry an hour later so need the protein. I cannot win as I don't always want to have meat and dairy gives me headaches and sinus problems. If anyone can throw light on this and what I can do please tell me as at times I feel like just eating chips and to hell with itWhat kind of thing does it stop with? Is fat sufficient or do you find you need protein?
Just to add to the above, I had 2 small handfuls of salted peanuts after I posted and my pre lunch level was 7.4.Fab question @KetoAnnie
I was going to do some research on this, but it seems from the responses, your BG can keep rising until you eat something and stop the fast.
I'll have a handful of nuts now and see if my pre lunch level is better.
Thanks everyone!
This thread took an unexpected turn from your original post, and a turn that has proved very interesting and helpful for a number of people.Just to add to the above, I had 2 small handfuls of salted peanuts after I posted and my pre lunch level was 7.4.
I will experiment tomorrow having a boiled egg to break the fast instead of nuts and let you know what my pre lunch levels are tomorrow.
Yes @aylalake I am now very curious how one item of food can affect someone so differently to another! This thread took an unexpected turn from your original post, and a turn that has proved very interesting and helpful for a number of people.
I am guessing from your last response (quoted here) that you are no longer as stressed and worried, but instead optimistic and curious. I look forward to the result of your experiment.
I am sorry to hear about your loss. Know that you have a huge community here to offer you support at this time and in the future. jSadly, my mum passed away on Tuesday....11 months to the day after my dad passed away.
I'm ever so grateful for everyone's advice and help so far.I am sorry to hear about your loss. Know that you have a huge community here to offer you support at this time and in the future. j
I used to have half an apple with peanut butter before bed and that would stop the increase. Also if I had lettuce before bed my bg would be about 6 in the morning, weirdThis morning I had 1 chicken drumstick at 8:45am amd my pre lunch reading was 7.2.
I will try a hard boiled egg next week and see if that brings my pre lunch reading below 7.
Have a lovely weekend people
Ooooo now that's a whole new spin!I used to have half an apple with peanut butter before bed and that would stop the increase. Also if I had lettuce before bed my bg would be about 6 in the morning, weird
Thank you for your reply @ianf0ster1. No that doesn't seem a high enough spike to mean that you necessarily need medication.
2. Did you check how many carbs were in the teacake? I find that I need to eat less than 50gms of carbs per day in order to stay in normal levels, others manage much more than me, but some need to have even less than me i.e. Keto (less than 20gms per day). T2's vary considerably.
3. If your BG ever goes down, even if it takes a long time, without taking insulin, then you are still producing insulin.
As a T2, I'm not an expert on T1, but I haven't seen anything that suggests that you need to be tested for T1.
I thought you said you cut out everything high in carbs. But then you go and eat a teacake - all normal baked goods are high in carbs! So you should have expected a nice big BG spike.
If you'd had butter on the teacake then it's likely that the fat would have slowed down the digestion of the carbs and so given your insulin a better chance of keeping your BG spike lower.
Almost all breakfast cereals, breads, biscuits, cakes, pie crusts etc are high in carbs, as are tropical fruits and all fruit juice.
I find dried fruit sends me sky high, amd I assume the teacake had some in. I also find wheat flour raises me.Thank you for your reply @ianf0ster
I mentioned I was experimenting while I have the libre, so although I have cut out all notable carbs, I was experimenting having a teacake for breakfast.
I was expecting a spike due to the carbs but definitely not to the extent of a 17mmol reading!
I've never had such a huge spike since I've been testing. I only spiked to 10.7 mmol after having a meal & vegan cheesecake
It's all a learning curve but, one I need to take, to cross off what I can and can't have.
Ideally, I would have liked to be able to have something to grab if I'm out and about like a teacake or sandwich however if I can't, I can't
I'll continue with my experiments to see what spikes my BG and update you all with how things are going
Sweet Lady, I am so sorry for your greif.Hi,
I've been pre-diabetic nearly all of my adult life (I am 52), floating between 43 and 47 mmol.
My mother is type 2 insulin dependent and my dad was, like myself, pre-diabetic.
My dad passed away in Jan and I fell off the carb wagon.
My last blood glucose was done in December 2022 and was 47 mmol. My readings for 15 Nov 2023 was 55 mmol and 1 Dec 2023 was 57 mmol.
I know this is due to my carb intake going from very low to comfort food overload.
My question is, previously I was able to go 3 months and get retested but this time I've been booked an appointment with a diabetic nurse before I've even seen a doctor.
I don't want to go on to medication, but do I have a choice based on my results?
I was hoping to get a blood glucose monitor and have the 3 months making a food diary of any spikes.
Thank you
