Strict diet or up the medication?

I saw a really nice dietitian at the hospital yesterday who was actually very support of my low carb diet and said she wished more people understood how and what to eat. I nearly fell over!

Saying that, she raised concerns I only take 1 500 SR metformin a day and how I have to eat so low carb to keep under 7. I do not present as a typical type 2 according the her and my GP is missing the point that I am 3rd generation fairly normal weight. I had crept up to a BMI of 28 / Size 14 but I honestly think now this was my body not coping with carbs. I have lost 23lb since the end of November and will soon be in size 10. I received the usual lecture from my GP of lose weight it's your fault and felt like I was taking up her time. The same GP looks after my dad and knows his sister has it and my Granmother did, all ok weight?

Anyway, the hospital want my care moving to them but I think hell will freeze over to be honest! A lovely nurse I have got to know through my dad said unless you are insulin they are not likely to unless I am a patient they would rather pass over to them if I am so not typical as suggested.

The hospital has sent a letter suggesting this, as well as my test strips should not be stopped due to retinopathy and how I use them wisely and scientifically (I was impressed with that, I was rubbish at school) and I should be on more mediation as what on earth is 1 tablet going to achieve. I have an appointment on Friday at the GP's surgery so we will see.

My question is: (I have learnt everything from this fab site, I do not post much as I feel I have so much to learn before giving advice but I do read everything posted) Would you keep on the very low carb diet for as long as possibly before increasing the meds as I feel may be the right thing to do or would you include more medication and possibly get to eat more carbs? I feel if I lose another stone I will look ill as I am only 5' and approaching size 10 clothes now, mid 40's no longer a teen.
By low carb I mean, Tesco porridge with soya milk and blueberries for brekkie or eggs and bacon. Salad most days for lunch with advacado and prawn , chicken ect. Dinner every other day is veg with meat or fish and if we have curry or chilli I manage a dessert spoon of rice and bulk up on aubergine. I can not eat a piece of fruit after a meal or I spike, I leave it 2 hours and no way can i tolerate pasta or sliced bread even granary. I have been trying 1/2 slice rye with my eggs in the morning and seem ok, I needed to fibre. The snacks are hard I tend to eat greek yoghurt and rasberries or a few nuts. I do not think my diet is missing too much and I am now having the odd glass of red with a meal twice a week to try feel normal. I think I eat like most people on here? I am frightened of progressing to insulin as seeing my dad miss manage it and hypo was awful.

Any comments appreciated on how you may have had to progress on medication or what I should discuss that I might not have thought of on Friday

Thanks

Personally, no I wouldnt eat a very low carb diet and I would take medication to help my bg levels stay stable and my reasons for saying that are that so many people who eat a very low carb diet say that they become more sensitive to carbs because of their very low carb intake. To me this seems counter productive, if carbs make your bg rise the last thing I would want to do is compound that and become more carb sensitive.

I eat a moderate low carb diet and far from needing more medication I have gone the other way from taking insulin and 4 x metformin at diagnosis I managed to come off insulin after about 12 months and now 4 years after diagnosis I am down to just 2 x metformin a day, I am convinced that taking medication in the early stages of my diabetes helped me immensely and whilst I did cut the carbs to between 60 and 80g a day in the early stages whilst I was on insulin I am now able to eat a relativity normal diet without problems, I still can not eat white bread or piles of potatoes or rice but in moderation I can eat most carbs in moderation without any dramatic rise in bg levels.

I probably eat somewhere between 120 and 150g of carbs a day now, I cant be sure as I never count them I just know from lots of testing what I can eat and what I cant, I can eat more carbs now though so again another reason for me to not go too low and become carb sensitive.

Thanks Sid, I have heard low carbing can make you more sensitive. It is a mind field knowing what is right and wrong. I will see what the surgery says on Friday

Re: Strict diet or up the medication? Doctor says no medicat

I am now very confused, the dietitian wants me on more medication so I can eat more carbs and the nurse has just informed me I am to come off all medication as my hb1 is 35 (5.3) I refused and now have to argue my case with the GP next week. According to the nurse I am no longer diabetic. I am suppose to go 3 month without medication and they will retest. I said I can save them the bother as my result will be the same as I am not and will not eat carbs as my levels go to high and as I already have retinopathy I am not experimenting with my health. I am fuming, the nurse said everyone's sugars go high after eating, to which I argued yes and they come back down as well. I have tested my hubby a few times and my very unwilling teenage son.

I am thrilled with my result but eating around 50g a day is restrictive and whilst I do not want to pig out surely 2 slices of bread or the odd bowl pasta should be allowed but with no tablets I would not dare try.

Any advice on how I deal with my next appointment or am I being daft and should celebrate my no longer diabetes (stop laughing she was serious)

Hi I was told if I lost weight I would be cured of diabetes! I put this suggestion from the doctor on here.. & everyone tells me that you can't be cured of diabetes.. You still have to manage it both diet & exercise!! This is from a seminar my doctor attended saying that you can cure yourself this way!! I would tackle it head on as I plan if this does happen to me. I'm close to a stone in weight loss! Which I was told should do it!! It's scary.. I think you need to log everything down so you have the evidence of your food/ blood sugar levels etc cycle.. They can then see how it really is.. If not then change the doctor you see & see if something else is said.. I'd definitely log it all! Hope this helps
