Struggling with insulin. Type 1.

Hi everyone I'm new to this forum.

I'm a type 1 diabetic I'm 28 years old and have had diabetes since the age of 6.

I was previously on humalin two injections a day.

While I was young I experienced a lot of hypos as got put on lantus and humalog which did reduce my hypos. My problem is ever since being on the humalog and lantus my brain function and overall energy have plummeted (this was ten years ago!)

I then yesterday went onto levemir and it made me feel even worse.

I'm genuinely at a loss to what could be going on. I just want to feel better.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
I'm sorry I can't advise on the Lantus v Levemir issue: I'm on Lantus and NovoRapid. I don't feel great on Lantus, but can't be sure it's the Lantus, I have been on it a long time, and it has never occurred to me that I should try another type of insulin.
Anyway, there will be a range of advice from people on here who know about both. I hope you feel better soon. Do you think your lack of energy could be dosage- or diet-related?
 
Hey thanks for reply. I don't think it's diet related. Ever since I've changed to lantus ten years ago my energy has got worse and brain fog has got worse. I do personally believe it's the insulin.
 
Can you describe what you mean by brain fog/diminished brain function..........

I would assume that these feelings, especially the lack of energy is down to blood sugar levels, both high and low.......

how are your daily levels in general.....?

are you hinting that you want to go back to a mixed insulin?

Yeah like my brains just foggy. My thoughts are a bit all over the place and I'm just cloudy headed and things seem unreal all the time. I have had thyroid tests etc done. I can't seem to get to the bottom of it . I don't know if it's linked but when I was on mixed insulin I didn't have this.or I have also heard animal insulin is quite good. My sugars are usually quite good I do swing a bit sometimes like high then low but I guess that's normal. I have no retinopathy or any other complications touch wood as of yet so I am lucky in that way
 
Hi. I'm on Levemir and NovoRapid. Both Lantus and Levemir have a good reputation on these forums for a low level of side effects but there will be exceptions. Assuming it is the insulin (may not be), there are other 'special' insulins for those who have reactions to try out. I think you will need to be seen by a specialist at the Diabetic clinic?
 
I'd say give the levemir a chance, give your body chance to react to the changes, it may get worse for a few days and then hopefully the fog will lift - I sound like a weatherman! - and the sun will shine with top tempratures of around 23..............
 
@AdamT1 I'm on porcine insulin because I couldn't tolerate the analogue insulin I was on and I feel a lot better. It wasn't until I googled that I realised it might be the analogue. I swapped to porcine as a trial (with the consent of my consultant) and felt better within a few days.

Not everyone is suited to the analogues. I don't know if this is your problem, but if everything else has been ruled out it may be worth looking into further.
