Craig. If your Vitamin D is low, it will impact how your body metabolises replacement T4, so please do deal with the Vitamin D as soon as possible.
Secondly, when you say you took medication (assuming levothyroxine at 50mcgr per day?) for 6 weeks bit it made no difference?
Very, very few people find their thyroid challenges resolve on their first dose of replacement hormone. There are many reasons for this, but the general strategy would be to take a starter dose of Levothyroxine (T4) for 6 weeks, then retest. More often than not, the dose is increased by 25mcgr a day and the six week test repeated, with doses titrated until levels are adequate and symptoms subside.
As a very slight woman with a TSH of just over 5, I was stared on only 25mcgr, but eventually titrated to 175mcgr before adding T3 and titrating that too.
Resolving thyroid challenges is not a quick fix. It is a frustrating, tortoise paced effort, but if titrations are too fast it can lead to problems, not the least of which can be palpitations, chest pains and breathing difficulties. Thyroid hormones can be powerful, so not to be messed with.
Who is leading you with your thyroid issues? After your 6-week disappointment, what are your next steps?
