Coming to terms with Diabetes is difficult whether you are just over the limit or more firmly in the diabetes camp. I find it hard to modify my lifestyle but realise it is essential. So take a deep breathe and follow the brilliant advice on this forum.

i dunnoe you well, so i could not decide for you.

i could only share my experience. i did worry a lot when it caught me. i could either step on the lchf route and hope for the best, or just taking the usual one way path towards the end. its difficult at first, and most difficult part is to start it.

Just don't buy grapes and bananas. Cheese is a good snack and fills you up nicely.
 
Thing is though that if eating cheese ...it's still calories... You must cut the carbs if eating more fat. Eating fat and carbs in large qty isn't going to help you. Carbs must be cut signigficantly.
Personally I would clear out majority of carbs from cupboard... And buy a few snacky nuts or cheese, but be careful that you do not overload on the fat.

I am being really careful , cut out wine with meals, lots of greens, fresh fruit, berries, yoghourt, minimal treats. I also walk a lot and not especially overweight, in fact getting trimmer yet my readings seem to drift up - 9-2 just now 3 hours after food. Also my toes and feet are tingly and a bit numb. I am totally confused by the whole diabetes thing.

If you give us an idea of what you are eating and drinking, maybe we can make some suggestions to try and help you get those numbers down.
 
start the day with greek yoghourt 15% fat mixed with berries and sprinkle of all bran. coffee with skim milk. Slice of dark toasted bread. during day i snack on peaches/apricots/some almonds. lunch either a smallish portion of smoked fish often with a few new potatoes and butter sometimes an omelette (3 eggs). otherwise a couple of frankfurter sausages or piece of meat grilled fresh veggies (broccoli/.carrots) afternoon snack a slice of toasted brown rye bread with a slice or 2 of processed cheese (gouda etc). Dinner similar to lunch . max of a glass of red wine or sometimes a glass of light beer. intermittent treats in moderation such as half a croissant - my wife eats the other half. Walk at least 2 miles a day. Weight around 85kg.

Mmmmmmmmmmm could be the snacking on fruit, especially peaches and apricots. We do have to be very careful with fruits. Could you try a different sort of snack and keep the fruit to eat with a meal rather than on its own?
Or possibly the potatoes and carrots.
The red wine won't harm your levels, but the beer might not be doing you any favours.
Do you test these meals? Test before and 2 hours after first bite, then you can see what the actual rise is and amend the meal if necessary, reduce portions of the carbs, and try again another day.
Do you keep a food diary? This is a good idea. Record everything you eat and drink, with portion sizes. Then record your before and after readings alongside. Looking back at these will help you learn how your meals are affecting you.

Also watch out for things like overall quantity - do you need to snack? Low fat yoghurts and skimmed milk have added sugar compared with full fat Greek yoghurt and whole milk. Cream with coffee is even better. Every little helps (or hinders depending on your viewpoint).
