Study says Low-Carb best for fat loss and vascular health

A new study from John Hopkins University suggests that a Low-Carb diet is better than a Low-Fat diet in promoting fat loss in obese patients, and leads to a greater improvement in Cardiovascular Health:

http://www.nmsociety.org/docs/LowCarbDi ... o-risk.pdf

The study was conducted of 6 months, on 60 men and women who weighed an average of 215lbs at the start of the study. Each was randomly prescribed moderate exercise and either a "low-fat" or a "low-carb" diet (both of which were approximately equal in calories). Although both the low-fat and low-carb diet led to weight loss, the weight loss from the low-carb diet was more significant:

Prof Kerry J. Stewart said:
After six months, those who were on the low-carb diet lost an average of 28.9 pounds versus 18.7 pounds among those on the low-fat diet.

The results are even more impressive because the low-carb diet led to a greater reduction in belly fat (which as we all know is a key contributor to insulin resistance). The study also investigated the health of the participants blood ateries by conducting a blood circulation test before and after the diet :

Prof Kerry J. Stewart said:
Our study demonstrated that the amount of improvement in the vessels was directly linked to how much central, or belly fat, the individuals lost, regardless of which diet they were on. This is important since there have been concerns that a low-carb diet, which means eating more fat, may have a harmful effect on cardiovascular health. These results showed no harmful effects from the low-carb diet.

According to the Press Release Stewart also notes that participants on the low-carb diet lost more weight and at a faster pace, on average, something that has been noted in several other studies:

Prof Kerry J. Stewart said:
eating higher amounts of carbohydrates can slow down the rate of body fat loss while on a weight reduction diet.

I think the results speak for themselves.I know several people personally, who base their whole diet on low fat spreads, skimmed milk and other low fat products and eat lots of bread, potatos and fruit "For roughage" as they call it YET they are on average,100lbs overweight and with Borderline bloodwork results. I know which Diet path I choose between the two!

Re: Study says Low-Carb best for fat loss and vascular healt

Although it's interesting to note that the "low-carb" diet, wasn't really that low-carb by some of our standards:

Low-carb diet:
30% Carbs / 40% Fat / 30% Protein = 150g Carb, 90g Fat, 150g Protein (for a 2000kcal diet)

Low-fat diet:
55% Carbs / 30% Fat / 15% Protein = 275g Carb, 65g Fat, 75g Protein (for a 2000kcal diet)

I think that what they were really comparing was a low-to-moderate carb diet, with a regular-to-high carb diet.

It's a pity that they didn't go further and test a <100g keto diet, but I think that the results are pretty encouraging for all of us that choose to control our diabetes using carb reduction, especially those of us that are trying to lose some weight...

It's all good!!

It is that Paul. :D Thanks for the info BF, I know walking up stairs doesn't make me feel my chest is going to explode any more. I put it down to weight loss, but yet again it's all down to reducing the poison carbs.

Ok, time to put my hand up and admit that I've been sitting here nodding every time someone mentions ketosis but I don't really understand. I'm carbing less than 100g per day - how do I know if I'm in this ketosis thing and it would be a good thing if I was, right?

I used to have some ketostix but they went out of date and I threw them away.. :(

Well, technically, your brain needs 100g of carb a day, so if you if eat less than that you need to start producing ketones to fuel it. I wouldn't worry about the ketostix though, it's not until you get down to <50g when you'll start spilling ketones into your urine.

Being in deep ketosis (<50g of carb a day) works well for some of us, and it's a good way of losing weight, but you probably don't need to go that low to manage your diabetes.

This is very good news for me. A short while before diagnosis I had a chest xray that showed my heart is slightly enlarged. I am off for a scan on it tomorrow. Fingers crossed everything is good.

What a lovely way of looking at it. I agree, Jeannemum is a diamond.

It was worth paying you that fiver then ;-)

Re: Study says Low-Carb best for fat loss and vascular healt

Great post Borofergie! Interesting for me is that their "low" carb diet was about what I eat according to the ratios you showed (150grams carbs etc) Didn't see a specific mention of hob-nobs though? Don't they promote even greater weight loss? (providing you don't eat anything else!)

Re: Study says Low-Carb best for fat loss and vascular healt

Just an update after my scan. The man wasn`t meant to tell me, but my heart is not only there, but it is normal :D I suspect they don`t share the news if there is anything wrong.

Re: Study says Low-Carb best for fat loss and vascular healt

It interesting that this study hasn't made the headlines like the "Red meat can kill you" of a few weeks ago.

I think in a few years the low carb revolution will win through and you will not get strange looks from people when you tell them that carbohydrate is bad for you!

It could make the suspicious ones amongst us wonder if there is some kind of carbohydrate conspiracy .......

Haha! You sound like me... I've only been married/divorced twice (now live with my long-term b/f) but when I refer to marriage I make myself sound like Elizabeth Taylor.

Re: Study says Low-Carb best for fat loss and vascular healt

Great news on the low carbing BF. I've lost weight by low fat diet before and was told by the specialist who took my gall bladder out that low fat diets CAUSE gall stones (because the gall bladder doesn't get stimulated, by enough fat, to empty regularly and therefore stones have time to form).

Yes. I think there is an agenda, but it's less anti low-carb, and more pro-low-fat. The whole establishment is so invested in the "fat is bad for you" dogma that they cannot acknowledge anything that proves it wrong.

The tide is turning, very slowly. There will be a reckoning sometime soon.
