Stupid readings over Christmas

I'm currently 10+5 weeks pregnant, so at the really critical stage where BG levels need to be good. It had all been going ok until the last 4 days happened, and basically I've had far too many peaks for my liking.

There's a combination of factors at work here - at home I'm not exactly LCHF but I do keep the carbs down and only eat those ones I've tested, but we've been staying away with various relatives etc so I haven't had control over the food options available. I also find it's much harder to say no at Christmas, because hosts want to see you having a good time and to them that equals eating the nice things. My willpower has not been good enough.

Most of the spikes have been short lived (up to 10 for an hour then back down again), but last night was awful, as I had pasta for dinner.

Went up to 11 and stayed there. Took a correction at 2 hours after which should have brought me down to 5, went to bed. Woke in the night to find I was still at 9.5. Took another correction to bring me to 3.5 (didn't care if I went hypo at this point, just wanted it down). Finally came down and woke at 4.5. But on the libre I can see I was over 8 for 6-7 hours in total.

I now feel awful about what this may have done to the poor baby. We are back home today so I can go back to my usual diet and be back in range (hopefully), but I'm worried about what damage has already been done.

Did anyone else have these kind of spikes in the early days? Did it turn out ok in the end? Any reassurance welcome as I'm feeling very worried right now.

@ArtemisBow I had spikes early on when I was first pregnant (around 5 weeks) and spikes again in the 3rd trimester. I had a number of 11s over the course of the pregnancy. My son is fine :)

I don't have a Libre or CGM so, if you think about it, I could have had highs at night and not known. I did test around 2am every night and sometimes had to correct late in pregnancy.

I'm sure your little baby is ok. I got myself in a state about my early highs because it was such a crucial stage of development. I imagined all kinds of stuff. But as long as you test often, spot the spike, correct the spike and adjust your insulin if necessary (eg if you always go high at that time) you should be ok. That's what my consultant told me.

Nobody can keep their blood sugar perfect 24/7. You're doing ok - and the fact that you're so worried about this shows you're really working hard at keeping good control :) Stressing too much isn't good. Concentrate on today and each day to come and I'm sure everything will be fine.

As a note, I use an extended bolus for pasta and stick to small portions which I weigh carefully. If I was to eat pasta at, say. An Italian chain restaurant, I'd have trouble because those portions are huge carb-wise.

I ate my normal amount of carbs during pregnancy (around 180g a day) and added in extra calories from fat. You should be able to eat a similar moderate amount of carbs ok. Just be prepared for your ratios to change a lot later, and your basal too.

Christmas is once a year. Forget it now and move on. You'll be ok {{ hug}}

Thankyou so much azure - that's really comforting. Today has been so much better already! Managed to stay below 5 so far so feeling much better about things.

The targets are so tight, and I know they are things to aim for and not achievable 100%, but I think any pregnant woman feels if there's something she's possibly done that might harm the baby then that's awful. I'm sure it's the same for people who eat a ton of pate before finding out it's on the banned list, or drink a lot before they know they are pregnant. Thankyou for your reassurance - hopefully things will be ok.
