Hi all, just been told i have Type 2, i have no idea of any readings yet as waiting to see the Nurse, feeling a bit worried as there seems so much to learn about all this, and how to manage it all.

Hiya, welcome and don't panic. While you're waiting for your test results I'll tag @daisy1 to give you a guide on managing your diabetes. Lots to read but hopefully will reassure you. We've all been there.

Welcome, take a deep breath, I think we all felt like that initially. There is a lot to learn and you will learn it but you don't need to know it all right away. Someone will be along to give you the information they give to new forum members. This is a very friendly and informative forum and people who will offer a lot of support don't be afraid to ask if you have any questions.

Hi there, I have had type 2 diabetes for several years now and have just totally ignored the condition as I was on the full dose of Metformin and felt so well, I didn't worry. However after having a blood test my diabetic nurse said my diabetes has got much worse and whereas I was at 52 test shows I am now 67. I know that the higher it is the worse it is but I haven't a clue what this means. I have checked online but all I can find is a low, medium & high chart and obviously I have to try and keep to the lower numbers. When it says Cabbage = 10 is that per ounce per pound - the whole cabbage or what!!
I really want to get the diabetes down if I can (pity I didn't do it years ago) but I haven't a clue how to go about it. I have never been given a machine to test my blood, but do I need one? I visited the pharmacist today and he said I really don't need one if I'm type 2 they are really for those on insulin. Sorry to gabble on but I so need some help. I have just ordered the g.i diet pocket guide, but am not sure if that's what I need.
Can anyone out there give me a few pointers? I would be very grateful. Many thanks

Hi @fujitsu and @Flowergirl100 , welcome :).

Two fundamentals to start with:

Yes you need a test meter - how are you meant to see how your blood sugars react to meals otherwise?

Cut right down on carbohydrates, not just sugar.

Have a read of the items linked in my sig below and ask any questions.

@Flowergirl100

Those numbers are HbA1c in mmol/mol. Normal range is under 42, 42-47 is prediabetic, 48 and up is diabetic. So you need to take action to reverse that trend. Are you on any medication? What do you typically eat?

Hi and welcome to the forum, you are in the right place to get yourself on track. Any questions dont be afraid to ask, we are a h.elpful bunch

Welcome to the forum Fujitsu

I was in your shoes 10 months ago and everything seems overwhelming but you will get to grips with the information in time and you will learn how to manage your condition- it just takes time

Hi Flowergirl and welcome

An HbA1c of 67 is high but not extremely high - some go over 100. You can get yours down in no time, with a few changes.

To find out the (estimated) carbs of a food, I google it, eg "carbs cabbage" and the full nutritional panel comes up. According to that source, 100g of cabbage is 6g carbs. You can also click on the drop down menu and find the carbs for other quantities, eg 1 cup of shredded cabbage is 4.1 carbs.
