Sudden drops in blood sugar

Diagnosed type 2 about 4 years ago, diet only (not good at keeping to it lately). Normal reading on meter 6.8 to 11. Usually around 7.5. Yesterday and today at about 9.15am started shaking all over, dry mouth, dizzy, speech went a bit weird. Checked blood sugar, it was down to 4.3 yesterday and 3.9 today. Ate some chocolate and has now come back to 6.5.

What is happening please?

What is happening is that for some reason your Bg levels went too low. 4 mmol/l is the 'floor', anything below that is considered a Hypo.

As you are not apparently on any medication it is probable that either you have had no food or too little. Eating chocolate is not the best thing to do. You should have had a small carby snack to stabilise your Bg levels.
 
Hi.

2 Weetabix and 2 toast is certainly not a small amount. Are you coming down with something or are there other meds that you are on maybe not related to Diabetes but which could have a detrimental effect ? What were you actually doing between breakfast and the low readings ?

Hello Lucky123,

This sounds a lot like reactive hypoglycemia. Lowering the total amount of carb that you're eating for breakfast may well help, as will keeping the G.I of any carb eaten as low as possible.

Yes, it could well be ? Could also be something else entirely. If it is then a GP needs to be consulted and the problem discussed.

Reactive Hypoglycaemia so you know what it is, is this.
This form of hypoglycaemia is probably caused by an overproduction of insulin from the pancreas after a large meal with a lot of carbohydrates. The insulin can still be detected even after several hours, although the level should be back to normal at this time. This condition is probably most common in overweight people and those with Type 2 diabetes, where the large demand for insulin can sometimes cause too much insulin to be produced in the pancreas.
 
Found out reason for sudden drop in blood sugar. Recently had my pregabalin doubled and a very rare side effect of this is a drop in blood sugar. Drug reduced and problem gone away.
