Sudden weight loss, but only moderate carb reduction.

I understand that sudden weight loss is possible on extreme diets like the Newcastle diet or other carb restricted diets. However in my case I have just moderated my carb intake by cutting out chocolates, sweets, cakes & crisps but otherwise eating normal meals. In the process, I have lost roughly 10kg since December 2020

I’m happy with the weight loss, but just concerned with how quickly the weight has come down. Is this normal that glucose reduction can help the body quickly clear fat stores? Or are there other conditions that are closely related to diabetes that I should look into / mention to GP.

I assume I'm T2 diabities, but no tests were done by the GP.

Blood Test December 2020

HbALc 84 mmol
Cholesterol 5.91 mmol
LDL 2.90 mmol
HDL 1.01 mmol
Triglycerides 4.39 mmol
RBC count abnormal slightly raised
Hematocrit abnormal slightly raised

Blood Test February 2021
BMI 23.9 / 71.5KG
HbALc 69 mmol
Cholesterol 4.7 mmol
LDL 3.18 mmol
HDL 0.83 mmol
Triglycerides 1.54 mmol
RBC count abnormal slightly raised
Hematocrit abnormal slightly raised

Liver blood Test March 2021
Bilirubin 6
ALP 88
ALT 45
AST 24
GAMMA GT 52
Protein 77
Albumin 50
Globulin 27

Are you using a glucose meter at home to see how your levels are?
I think it's well possible to quickly lose weight after cutting the carbs, but weight loss in a newly diagnosed diabetic can also be a reason to look into type 1.

Hi. Sudden weight loss can be an indicator of late onset T1 (LADA). Do ask the GP for the two tests for T1 i.e. GAD and C-Peptide. Your starting BMI is quite high which makes T1 less likely but worth getting the tests done if this weight loss continues.

Would a T1 see such a pronounced improvement in HbA1c in a short period though through simply cutting out carbs?
84 to 69 Hba1c improvement looks pretty much like T2 reducing carbs?

I read @Sugarcube2021 post to say that their BMI is now 23.9. This is not high and more likely to be an indication of T1.
T1 is worth looking into but T2 can have weight loss in the same way. Also carb cutting can also lead to weight loss. I lost easily 4kg a month during the start of my journey so the levels quoted don't actually seem a significant weight loss as action is being taken

10kg that fast, no dietary changes would be much more concerning

But I second thG it's worth raising to the Dr and getting checked. At the least it sets your mind to rest

An adult T1 with slow onset diabetes (LADA) could very well see much improved numbers for quite some time, yes. It's one of the reasons it's hard to diagnose T1 on presentation in adults; in the early stages it can behave a lot like T2.
