Sugar, what is it and is it good or bad for us?
This weeks Bang Goes The Theory investigated the truth about sugar explaining how it is made in this country and how even lean people like Dr Scott Nelson can discover they have fatty liver disease and the consequences of that as we know can lead to T2 diabetes.
The first part of the episode shows how sugar is made from beet without it turning to glucose and how brown sugar can be more processed than white sugar!!
Then my reason for watching this series* explains why we love sugar so much, and how important sugar is to us, being the planets universal energy source and crucially how we have evolved to seek out sugar for our very survival, this instinct is apparently so strong that some researchers believe it may even lead to addiction just like alcohol and drugs.
One in five of us here in the UK are thought to suffer from non alcoholic fatty liver disease and its on the increase but sugar may not be entirely to blame?!
Are artificial sweeteners better for us than sugar? Just another of the questions explored by the BGTT team. And finally the medicinal properties of sugar and its uses in modern medicine.
A really interesting program and I would urge everyone here to find a quiet half hour in which to watch it, it may confirm your worst fears or it may explode some of the myths that surround sugar.
