Good morning all

This is my 1st post but wanted some thoughts on my situation

I am type 2, on xigduo (metformin/dapaglaflozin) x2 daily, glicazide x 2 daily plus i am now also on Manjaro 5mg injections

I can be anything from 11 to 25 , peaked at 33.7 blood sugar levels in a morning before food.

My diet is not good as I refuse to totally remove sugar/cards, 58 years old and too stubborn to eat lettuce.

Is anybody out there with similar figures who can advise

How important is your stubbornness to you?
Doesn't have to be lettuce (in fact there is almost no point in eating lettuce) - bacon and eggs, steak, all sorts of good things, but sugar will keep you on the track you are on.
I had pretty similar numbers, and I'm only a couple of years behind.
I don't take any meds now. I was totally convinced I knew what a good diet was, right up to the point that I was diagnosed, then I gradually began to unpick the lifetime of training I had had in eating a certain way.
It's up to you, but you can turn this around if you choose.

Hi and welcome. I take it you're seeing those figures while on the medication you describe?

One issue is that raised blood sugar levels over time will do damage to your nerves and capillaries. It did to mine, and even though I have lost most of the symptoms since getting my blood glucose back to normal levels, I have some permanent damage.

Advice really depends what you choose to do - and it's entirely your choice. There's no magic fix. The figures you report would indicate to me that even with your level of medication your system is not currently capable of handling the carb you're eating. So the choice is yours: continue with how you're going on at present, and risk damage, or make some sort of change.

I don't eat lettuce much, but I do eat meat/fish/eggs/dairy, that sort of thing, and very few carbs. That was my choice.

Hi @stunner1901 ,

Pff... Those numbers are high. And they're like that even with the glic and all? That's... Not good. Personally my guess would be, if nothing changes one way or another, insulin injections are likely in your future, because you can't be that high all the time and not experience damage somewhere rather vital. Kind of surprised you're not on it already, what doc would be okay with 33 mmol/l fasting? Ah well. How do you feel about insulin injections? If you're already on Mounjaro, you're getting used to self-administering shots, so... Maybe not as scary to you as some might find the prospect?

You refuse to change your diet to lettuce, which I quite understand, but... The point of changing your diet to suit diabetes, is lowering carbs on one end, but putting in nutrient-dense food on the other. Fats, protein, that sort of thing. Lettuce...? Basically water. Not a heck of a lot of nutrients in there, technically kind of useless. I do enjoy a salad myself, but more as a vehicle for the fatty fish or chicken I like. And mayo, and bacon! ;) So eggs and bacon, sausages etc to start the day off with'd be a lot better. Lunch could be similar, meat, fish, above ground veg. Some'd just go for a cheese roll-up, basically a slice or so of cheese slathered in butter, and Bob's your uncle. (Though one could put in a slice or so of ham, salami, bacon or whatever. Or use a herb butter for extra flavour!). Going low carb does NOT mean going low fat, and most certainly doesn't mean going hungry, though with the Mounjaro you're not likely to feel hunger. I still go to McDonalds and have their Double McTasty with Bacon, just have them leave off the bun. Makes for juicier burgerpatties to boot, and I don't feel like I'm missing out. Blood sugars enjoy it, too. ;)

Maybe look into a ketogenic or Low Carb, High Fat diet before you rule dietary changes out entirely. One of those options could keep you from getting progressively worse, and no rabbit food mandatory. Far from it. If you do try it out though, do be careful of hypo's, as a low carb diet with gliclazide can make you face-plant.

You be good to yourself eh, whatever that ends up looking like for you.
