Sugar Tax??

The colour coding is coming though, so yours is a good call. Perversely, I've just been taking with the other half on her 4lb weight loss this week. She fell right into the trap ( which surprised me) of saying that the malt loaf she had yesterday was ...low fat!
BUT LOADED in sugars, I reminded her.

Surely it would make more sense to force food processors/supermarkets/coffee shops to colour code high sugar items.. anything with more than say 5g of sugar per 100g has to be put in bright red packaging to show how dangerous it is? Coke tins would then already be the correct colour...
It would. But you forget how hard the Industry lobbied against clarity in labelling and trying to stop the simpler traffic light system. While they still own the Government, we can't make progress. Trans fats is another example.

A fair point...though the price of vehicle fuel ( the vast majority is taxation) has dropped to the extent that millions of 'extra' miles are being driven....so perhaps punitive taxation can modify behaviours? As we all know the drive to a higher carb/ sugar enriched diet was certainly not helped by the crusade to demonise fats, animal in the main. In addition, due to socioeconomic reasons, where convenience foods took a foothold in our day to day diets. What frustrates me is that many of us Type 2 diabetics now know this and try to take steps to address the issue- not unlike fitting a burglar alarm the day after the 50" flat screen has disappeared at 3am, though.
Very good points - especially about the T2 diabetics.

If anyone should be punished and/or taxed for excessive sugar or carbs it should be the manufacturers. The consumer should not have to take the rap for the manufacturers disregard for health. They possibly have financial benefits for adding them into the food such as longer shelf life. Put the blame where it belongs on the manufacturers who should know better.

That's a good point, though how about that home economics was made compulsory at school. I was forced to do an hour a week contemplating the baby Jesus etc....if I was at school today I wouldn't have an issue learning to cook from scratch. We all know, due to our condition(s) just how unhealthy certain processed and even 'healthier' food can be.
