Hi all,

I'm brand new here but I'm hoping I can let some of my worries out on this forum!

I'm currently 34 weeks pregnant and I have type 2 diabetes. My latest hba1c came back as 40 so in normal range, yet my sugar levels are going up and up. I'm injecting 5 times a day and my sugars seem to be an average of 8-10 two hours post meal when they should be around 6.4. I'm worrying my head off! I'm in weekly contact with my diabetic team and they keep putting my insulin doses up by 2 units each week but the more the dose goes up, the more my sugars seem to go up! Has anyone else had this?
Really need some reassuring as worrying about baby. Diabetic team say it's normal for numbers to fluctuate but why is this happening :(

Hi I'm type 1 so others may know more about type2. However during (my) pregnancies your insulin requirements shoot up in the last trimester. I was increasing my insulin all the time.
I would increase your units -can you try an extra unit of your short acting at meal times and see what that does or inject 15 mins before? Are you eating low GI foods to stop spikes?
If you are worried ring your dsn rather than wait til your next appointment.
Don't panic it will make things worse!

Can you tell us a little about what insulin you take and when?

Do you count carbs?

@1Sarah1 is right - don't panic. Nothing can't be sorted :)

I'm 34 weeks and mine have done same last two weeks my DNS upped my bolus made huge difference and I correction dose too what insulin are you on ?

Hi ladies... if you are concerned about any aspect of your pregnancies u could ring your specialist midwife or text her.... she will respond once she is on duty.... alternatively ring the labour ward which is 24 hours service.... the obstetricians are there....

Thanks so much for the replies, I'm glad I'm not the only one it's happened too!

I'm currently on humulin I before bed (20 units) and when I wake up (15 units) then I'm on novorapid before breakfast (15 units) before lunch (10 units) and before dinner (15 units)
Its usually after breakfast and dinner when they spike to their highest, although lunch time is now slowly increasing. It seems the more I go up with my doses the more my body resists! I'm going to call my dsn tomorrow, as I have been every week! I just worry baby will have complications and I wish I wouldn't because as you say, it can make it worse :(

Maybe speak to your DSN about having your fast acting insulin a little more in advance of meals so that it controls the spike better. When I was pregnant and on Humalog, I had to have my breakfast insulin 40 mins before I actually ate. That helped a lot. Do check with your DSN and gradually move it forward if they say that's ok.

Also, you could ask about correction doses in case you get a big spike.

Don't worry too much. It's important to control your blood sugar, yes, but my control was very good and I still had spikes of 11 some days. My baby is fine :)

I corrected the spikes. They were usually after my evening meal.

I've started to inject 30 mins before I eat my breakfast and it's made a difference baby will be fine
Let us know what ur DNS says x

Hi.... in some trusts the diabetic pregnant women are managed by a specialist midwife within a team which includes obstetrician, physician and dietitian etc

@Hayleealice hope all is well x

Hi all, thanks again for all your lovely replies :)

Spoke to the nurse yesterday and literally just upping my insulin by another two units. Sugars seem okay today so far, but my humulin I before bed made no difference whatsoever even though it's gone up two units, any idea why?! Got to ring back in a few days to give an update so I'm hoping there will be an improvement! :)

If you're going high overnight, you could test during the night to see when the rise is happening maybe?

It's a good idea leaving it a few days to see if your bloodvsugar settles down. Sometimes it takes a little time to assess how changes are working.
