Hi guys,

I'm just looking for some suggestions on a competitive sport that doesn't require a team. I played rugby for 12 years and then took up cross country mountain bike racing. The racing never went very well as my body is more designed for sprint/strength work because endurance seems impossible for me as I can't keep up with the skinny folk :-( lol

Anyway, just looking for some suggestions.

Thanks
Craig K

My daughter has recently taken up kick boxing.
She seems keen for me to have a go, I suspect she probably wants to just kick me.

It is looking attractive though.

Haha that or regular boxing (would prefer to be punched than elbowed or knee in the face lol) could be fun. I'm 22 so is it easy enough for someone my age to just turn up to that kind of thing and actually be competitive?

She's 21 and just started, I'm way too old too ever be anything other than bruised.
It does look interesting though.

But I suppose you probably have to start earlier to be 'world class'
You can turn up and be very, very, good though, so I'd say yes, if you want to give it a shot.
I think you need to choose the right group to work with.
It depends what you mean by competitive as well.
I tend to push myself, and am happy to beat my own personal targets, she prefers to beat others into the ground.
My age, walking away later is probably a personal best, she more the karate kid, win on one leg type.

But then again, at my age, I'm just pleased I can start a sport, so that in itself means something to me.

As a bit of background, I was really unfit, after many year of eating to excess, and no exercise.
The turning point was an NHS gym, for coronary, and physio patients.
It suited me perfectly, as there was no pressure, I improved immensely, and after that signing up to a normal gym, with disgustingly fit people didn't really make me stick out as the fat sweaty bloke I would have been otherwise.

So, after all that, yes it's well worth turning up, having a look around, finding the right group, and always remembering, they all started somewhere as well.
Worst thing that can happen. you get a good kicking.
Literally :)

Haha no I don't want to be world class. I would however like something with competitions to enter (such as an amateur league or something)

And I work in a sports centre so I know what you mean :-) lol.

I lost a lot of weight a while ago through lifting weights and cycling but it's all going back on again :-(

Do you live in a town/city/countryside/by the coast, and do you want to be indoors or outdoors?

OCR Obstacle Course Racing races most weekends around the country and worldwide. Easy to insane. (if you have heard of tough mudder or Spartain just 2 of many) This is a site with loads of info http://www.mudstacle.com and also there is an excellent face book group who help each other chat pass info and discount codes very much all for one and one for all.....search for "Obstacle course racing (UKOCR)"
OCR have just started an official body in the last week or 2 which is hoping to eventually in a few years to go Olympic with it the brits have just beaten the yanks in the world championships in USA

You can go as team you can go individual and often ad hock teams start up who live around the country and only meet up at a race. it is however you want. If you get good there is several sponsored teams around. Racing is year round there is no barrier so long as you give it a go walk or run all are welcome. l can not run want to improve and l walked my first one all 10km and 30 obstacles (l didn't do about 4 obstacles) am booked on 2 more next year and bad Achilles done a few weeks back means night ones l wanted also are on hold.

This was my first http://www.totalwarrior.co.uk/course/

Hi thanks for the responses. I'm not really fussed whether it's indoor or outdoor because I still do a lot of outdoor stuff anyway such as mountain biking.

I had a look at the tough mudder etc but I'm not really good at the long distance running. More than 1k is long distance for me haha.
Might be worth a try though

You beat me to it MID.

I'd also suggest indoor rowing, all over in 6-8mins, cycling time trials, a 10miler is over in less than 30min.

A good runner could do a 5k in 20mins or less.

I dont have much interest in running. I hate it! lol

Cycling time trials is also a big endurance sport lol. I'm currently looking into enduro racing which is a cross between downhill and cross country mountain bike racing but its quite pricey.

As I said it needs to be something I can train for on my own, I've looking into some things mentioned and a lot of training days are mon, wed, friday and I cant do wed, thurs or friday nights because I work those 3 day 3 times a month :-(

That's funny, you call half an hour an endurance sport. :hilarious:

My endurance trained legs are pretty underpowered this year.

You could try track cycling instead, that's all over pretty quickly

Squash good for fitness and keep fit.....iv been playing squash for about 13 years.... I'm a diabetic since 1990 on insulin.....

Ye u can start playing local club leages competitive.....if never play u can take lessons from coaches in ur area..... If uv been playing then join leages

I suggest golf. There is competition in trying to beat the inanimate object known as a golf course or the animate ones in a club competition. Hours of endless fun if you don't weaken and no running involved.

Come the day you jump in the lake in frustration can you retrieve my clubs for me please.

@ElyDave cycling flat out for 10 miles would be near impossible for me. I have always been a sprinter, never long distance. For me the 10k is long distance.
