Well that was my intention then out of the blue I've started losing weight. I've taken tramadol for severe pain and reduced my stomach grumbling 2000mg metformin for 1000mg. I think metformin has just kicked in. I checked the scales this morning and I'm still losing, water retention seems not so bad too. For once meds are actually making a physical difference.Well I'm restarting low carb healthy fat with low salt and careful protein substitutes for carbs on friday. Too much protein for me raises my bgs too, not just carbs.
Low bgs don't help me lose weight either just keep me diabetically healthy.
I might monitor calories just to keep an eye on too much fatty foods making me add weight.
It didn't stop me conceiving twice. My specialist kept a tight close eye on thyroid levels whilst pregnant as it can stunt mental development in the foetus.Thank you
I will ask the doctor.
I need my insulin levels stable as I can as I'd like to try for another baby after the wedding.
Do you no weather having thyroid problems will cause fertility problems?
X
Only once I reduced cheese and nut amounts did I start losing. Any excess in your diet?Well, here we are, at the end of march. And i still havent lost more than my initial 16 lbs months ago. Despite upping my exercise, and reducing my carbs more.
On the good side - my bs levels havent been better!!!
But I need to have a whinge as I dont want to wear the same size Summer clothes as last year : (((((
I wish they invented a hypo and hyper simulating sweet which didn't harm them but let them see how it feels to be us! Then make them carry a body weight around and tell them to stop eating or exercise more!zand post: 1427095 said:Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh! So many people judge us fat T2s. I really wish some of them could walk a mile in my shoes.
no nuts at all and very little dairy.Only once I reduced cheese and nut amounts did I start losing. Any excess in your diet?
I am going to stick my neck out here and ask a possibly very stupid question:
Is insulin resistance the same as type 2 diabetes?
i just cant get my head round what insulin resistance is, and what to do about it. Its like my brain freezes up when I try to understand it : (
Thank you!!! I have been struggling with Jason Fung and feeling like i understand each word individually, but cant make sense of the sentences. You know the first time you have alcohol? You get the effects really quickly?
But if you keep having a drink, every day, you soon build up a tolerance to it.
It is the same with insulin.
Normal people eat carbs, release insulin, the blood glucose is controlled, and insulin levels drop. Til the next time they need insulin. Basically carbs, blood glucose and insulin have a perfectly balanced dance inside a normal healthy body.
But if we have a predisposition to insulin resistance, then something different happens.
To start with, as our bodies are exposed to insulin, regularly, and in largeish amounts, we develop a resistance to it. Like with the alcohol. People who drink regularly dont get pished on a single glass, do they? Then, in order to control the blood glucose, we need to produce more insulin to do the same job. But the more insulin used, the quicker our resistance builds, in an escalating spiral. And the harder it is to get the insulin to work. And the more insulin needed to do the job.
This all happens before our blood glucose rises much - and before we become pre-diabetic.
Eventually, the resistance builds to the point where the body can no longer maintain 'normal' blood glucose.
This is pre-diabetes.
Then it rises higher and we move into T2 diabetes.
Insulin is the hormone that pushes blood glucose out of the blood and into the fat cells, storing it as fat.
So why does it happen? Because our bodies are flooded with insulin. And why does that happen? Because we are eating enough of the kind of foods that require insulin (carbs), to have enough insulin floating around to build up a resistance to it.
So why do some people get insulin resistance when others don't? Even eating the same amount of carbs? Or eating less carbs than those other people?
That would be because of genetics, environmental factors, various medical treatments, ageing organs, injury, medication like statins and so on... And exposure to carbs - because they trigger insulin release.
(Insulin resistance can be lowered, by exercise, low carb, fasting and some medications, and there is also another side to the story, because sometimes our capacity to produce insulin fails through over work, or a fatty liver, but we don't have to be obese with subcutaneous fat for that to happen)
If you want references for all of this info, then you can find it at Jason Fung's Intensive Dietary Management Blog. His discussions and in depth explanation of insulin resistance are excellent.
Thank you!!! I have been struggling with Jason Fung and feeling like i understand each word individually, but cant make sense of the sentences.
Have you got a ladybird guide to what medications help with insulin resistance? I know I dont have a fatty liver.
I still don't understand why I'm losing weight when I'm just low fat and low carb when many say that doesn't usually work.I just think it would be good to have a place where those of us who, despite our best efforts, cant seem to shed the weight.
There may be reasons for this that are, as yet, not understood medically.
There may be mental, emotional or physical health issues, or a combination of issues.
But whatever the reason, I wanted a thread for us to support each other, without people coming on telling us we are doing X,Y or Z wrong, and just being there for each other.
Have you had treatment and counselling for the depression? I did what you describe for a while, but since counselling I get depressed less often and when I am depressed eat less of the wrong things. I feel for you because I have been there too. I think part of the problem is that 'diets' aren't sustainable in the long term. When I switched to low carb higher fat I found I didn't need to go hungry anymore and that was a great help, so now it's a way of life more than a diet for me.I'm currently on a downward spiral, with no way out at the moment. I was diagnosed t2 about 4 years ago. I also suffer with depression. I've always been on the larger side of life, and I've tried almost all the different diets out there.
When the depression hits, I eat.
When I eat, all the weight loss on the previous diet goes out the window.
The weight goes back on and I feel more depressed.
So I comfort eat... again...!
And so it goes on.
That big dark cloud is looming large over me again, made worse by the fact that I couldn't even manage a 5k charity walk at the weekend.
I know, one day soon, the roundabout will slow down enough for me to jump off again. I just need to find a way to stop myself hopping back on when the next cloud starts showing its face.
