We have a political problem in the UK with the government claiming that too many people are interpreting being sick as an alternative to occupation.

How does 'throwing a sicky' translate into german?

I remember the good old days of the german system of team shifts called Accordarbeit. Workers' reaction to it was generally , 'Accord ist Mord', meaning murder.

A good way around it was to go to work for a day and then go out drinking all night with no sleep. Then go back to work drinking lots of very strong coffee. At the end of the day the trick was to go to the works doctor who would measure pulse and blood pressure and invariably diagnose, 'kreislaufkollapse' , a collapse of the circulation.

If you were lucky, your insurance company sent you to a Spa resort like Baded Baden for four weeks of pampering.

They've tightened up since then though.
