Can some one help me here, I drink lots of coffee (decaff) and use 1-2 sweeteners. My family are concerned with the amount of coffee and sweeteners that I am consuming. Is decaff coffee safe as well. Is there evidence that sweeteners are not good for your health. :?

Hi Bluestar,

I drink loads of coffee - shamingly not the decaff stuff. The only thing for me is the carb content in the milk so i sometimes use soya milk.

I know other diabetics who use sweetners with no problems.

All the best

Hi bluestar,

Mixed opinions on the forum about coffee and sweeteners. Perhaps you could wean yourself off the sweeteners?

Catherine.

bluestar,

I would also advise that you reduce or cut out the sweeteners altogether, but can't see any harm in drinking the coffee, more-so the decaff version! :D

Here is a article on the safety of artificial sweeteners, it does make reference also to people with diabetes:

I'm one of those who can drink loads of Coffee, use the odd spoon of sugar, use sweeteners (Splenda) and don't have any problem at all with Bg levels and am not concerned for my overall health.

I think you just need to test after you drink Coffee or use sweeteners see what effect they might or might not have on Bg levels. I don't subscribe to the view that they are bad for you either.....just my personal view. :)

There is a view that they are bad for you.......it's all about personal choice and what you read and if you believe it or not.

I love coffee, but it is bad for the brain waves that we all need for a good night's sleep.

Also, many sweeteners contain Aspartame which is widely regarded as another "no no".

Everything in moderation I guess.

Personally I have 2 cups of coffee every morning to wake me up, then another 2 or 3 before lunchtime. As a rule I don't drink coffee after lunchtimes anymore and find I'm less "tense" by dinner time and sleep better at night.

I guess just trying cutting down to 1, and then cutting them out altogether if it's bothering you. You can definitely get used to the taste, beverages now taste better to me that they're not diluted with the sweetness. Do you actually want to give up coffee? maybe replace some of your coffee with other beverages.

Too much sweetener can give you diarrhea and lead to dehydration, headache, this happened to me once when i had a bar of diabetic chocoalate, never again. Oh and once when i was younger and had too much chewing gum lol. Too much phenylaline can be bad for you and cause other symptoms >.<

My grandfather used sweeteners for decades up until he died at the age of 95. If you prefer your beverages with them I would say carry on. Most of the scaremongering and false information comes from the sugar industry, as you would expect.
