Hey,
So I've been hard at it lately in the gym and with my diet and things are moving a little too slow for me at the moment. I've been thinking of using fat burners for while, just because I'm also really into my fitness at the moment and heard they're a good boost. The only thing is that I'm worried how they might affect me. I'm aware it could take a bit of trial and error but I'm wondering how much? I don't want to be having scary, uncontrollable lows or coma-inducing highs! Or just some sort of weird reaction and stop living (bit dramatic, but I'm a huge worrier!)
Obviously I know that fat burners with ketones in the ingredients is out of question but are there any other ingredients I absolutely should avoid? Or ones that anyone has found will help?
Anyone on here taken them? I'd really love some tips or advice on them, there's pretty much no information online about fat burners and diabetes type 1.
Thank you x

Hi luceygoosey92, welcome to the forum,to be honest i don't think we need fat burners as when we get the lchf regime correct our bodies naturally burn off excess fat, have a look at the info given to new posters here @ daisy1 will be along with this, in my case i was 16 st 7 lbs and bs's were 28.6 then found this forum and all the great people who helped me to see that lchf is the way to control bs's , my weight dropped to todays 13st 2lbs and bs's averaging 4.8 .and that from sept 14 to today !!!!it's only natural to worry ....but as you will find out on your journey here , with some dietry changes and moderate exercise , you will get a good results, so keep posting and ask as many q's as you like ::))

I have Type 1, I find that when I do periods of increased exercise, the results show suddenly - I drop a lot of weight - but the sudden drop happens after a few weeks, when my metabolism cranks up and my basal rate needs to be dropped. Obviously it takes a few weeks to put the muscle on. It's not instantaneous. But then, like you, I am female.

Also, if I don't drop my basal at that point, I end up with lots of hypos and start eating more and wreck my weight loss plans!

I am useless about fat burners, though, because I've never tried them, but I find the fat drops off anyway as the muscle goes on. I have never used lchf. I find medium to high carb has always worked for me. I've had Type 1 since 5. My sports have included club hockey, martial arts (kempo and karate), cycling, swimming, tennis and weights.

I've had really good results using a cyclical low carb diet and combined it with resistance training. Basically weights three times a week focusing on different muscle groups each time, low carb every day except Saturday when I eat 250-300g of carbs (not carb containing foods) to replenish glycogen.

This latest round has seen me drop from 14.5 to 10.5% body fat.

Prior to training I take a preworkout supplement that is creatine, beta-alenine, caffeine and taurine, with branch chain amino acids and whey protein post training. My low carbing is not high fat but split calories between protein and fat.

Seems to work for me.

That's useful to know. How can I find out what "cyclical low carb diet" means exactly? I am trying to improve my muscle to fat ratio.

Cyclical is, for me:

45% of calories from fat, 45% from protein, 10% from carbs, 6 days a week, then on carb reload day, as close as 50% from carbs, 50% from protein as possible.

I train frequently also, Fat burners have never affected my diabetes, I'm currently using Hydroxy cut which is really good for shredding them pounds and I've also used Lipo 6 which is great to! but yeah I've had no side effects at all from using them so maybe just give it a try or consult your GP if your really worried about using it for the first time. Just stay away from fat burners called carb blockers, I've never tried them and by the name itself, it wouldn't go down well if i had a Hypo. lol

Hope that helps a little

:)

Carb blockers are really not good. They convert carbs to triglycerides.... The worst form of cholesterol lipid...

Thanks for the reassurance! And well done on the progress :) it's more just impatient frustration for me because I've been trying so hard for what feels like so long and seen little to no results.. but it's good to know that my diabetes shouldn't be what's holding me back, I just got to change a few things and keep going I guess :)

It's been a constant up and down but unfortunately with not much overall progress.
I haven't had to drop my basal at all. Everytime I have even a little bit, I've had really high bloods.
The metabolism thing is also an issue though, I have an under active thyroid.. How's your natural metabolism?

I'm not type 1 but, type 2.

I have used Acetyl L Carnitine with good helpful results. I had limited success with Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) supplementation.

Both the above were with a reduced carbohydrate intake. You'll have to be careful and find what works for you and your goals. For example, you're going to need some carbs to restore depleted glycogen stores in your muscles if you're resistance training but, you don't need as much as is generally purported.

It's a complicated and personal (to you) area.

I found the book 'Diabetic Athlete's Handbook' by Sheri R Coldberg invaluable. It covers Type 1 and type 2 and was recommended to me on the running forum I'm a member of when I was struggling with low Blood Glucose episodes on my early morning runs.
Thanks for your help! I'll read up on these

Seems like something to try. How many carbs do you consider 'low carb' for you? I'm ridiculously up and down with my daily carb intake

@jack412, it is when you are eating normally. I am not. I am going through a phase if increasing lean mass and decreasing body fat. This is not a normal diet. I have gained about three kg in three weeks and lost nearly a third of my body fat. It is a lean mass gain of about 7kg. I have to say that it isn't the most straightforward thing to be doing...

Very interesting. I am also on thyroxine. I've been taking it since I was thirteen. My endo did increase it about three months ago, and I did lose a lot of weight very quickly, but I was also less sedentary for the next three weeks (decorating my son's flat, instead of editing books). I think it does have a big effect. How long since you had yours checked?

I might have to try that, though my endocrinologist might just die of shock if I gained that much muscle so fast. I doubt it's possible for a woman, though. Half that would be good!
