Wondered if anyone was misdiagnosed as T1 but was actually T2 I have heard of it the other way round T2 to T1
My son was diagnosed with late onset T1 when he was 46 usual symptoms loosing a lot of weight quickly drinking loads and feeling exhausted all the time and his BG levels were really high when they tested him so was told he had T1 and he was put on insulin. He had been recently divorced so was single at the time and didn't really look after himself properly He never bothered with a diet after the diagnosis he just ate what he wanted mostly takeaways or eating out. We had eaten out with him quite a lot and he never tested or injected when he ate out just did the insulin when he got back home. Some years later he moved to a new area which meant a new doctor and consultant and looking at his diabetic history which there always seemed to be problems with neither one thought he was actually T1 but rather T2 or maybe 1.5 but they could never really confirm it was 1.5 so treated him as T2 and took him off insulin. He is just on tablets now Metformin and another one he takes he says is a fairly new one that they changed him to from Gliclazide. That was a couple of years ago and he is doing really well now. He has a new partner and she has taken his diet in hand and insisted he cuts the carbs and he eats far more healthily his BG levels are good as is his weight and he looks and says he feels better than he has done for years

I think in the past it used to be believed that DKA meant you were Type 1, but as time has gone by there is more acceptance now that Type 2s can also get DKA. That may have been why he was put on insulin straight away.

The weight loss could be what made them think Type 1. I lost a big amount of weight and in a very abnormal kind of way.

Presumably he's never had a GAD test to look for antibodies? How are his HbA1C and BS results off the insulin?

I think being misdiagnosed as a T2 when someone's actually a T1 is a lot more common, but I think there have been some people here who were the other way round. Sorry I can't remember any names for you.

I don't know if he had a GAD test but anyway he says that his blood results are good now
