HELP don't know what is going on. In March sent to hospital as blood sugars were 22.4ish. Put on 1000 Metformin in morning and night and 1/2 gylclizide in the evening. I had number of hypos, the worse in beginning October where I had blood sugar of about 2.4 late at night. I took 2 drinks of fresh orange to bring bs up. In the night I got up to use the toilet and I collapsed, sliding my face across the carpet causing nasty carpet burns and a black eye. My husband was panicking. I then collapsed again. Rang diabetic nurse who said come off Metformin and Glyclizide. So, no tablets. I \went on holiday the next day 5/10 to Turkey, all inclusve and measured my bloods every day. Bloods seemed good, around 5.9 but one night 01.30. IT WAS 9.11, next nighT 8.7, next night 01am , next dy 1pm 5.9, 4pm 6.3, 11.30 8.00, next dt 11am 6.1, 7.30 4.3 , 11.30 6.6 and it goes on around the same levels

What is it you are asking for help with @Rosiek ?

Am I right in thinking you were diagnosed diabetic, took oral meds, had a nasty hypo, came off the medication and have had normal blood sugar levels since?

Your more recent levels sound pretty good. Are you managing these levels with absolutely no meds? The 9.11 and the 8.7..were they more than 2.5 hours after eating..and if so..what had you eaten last. My initial diagnoses level was similar to yours. I was placed on Gliclazide, and it was only when I came off the meds I was able (with my meter) to establish which foods were having the impact. It certainly sounds like the meds were perhaps too strong or too many thus allowing your level to drop so dramatically and cause hypos. Now, I am not advocating that people should drop their meds as many, many benefit from being on them. We are all variations on a theme...and for me personally, on no meds, I control my levels by eating only low carb foods (mostly!). I would imagine that your next HbA1c blood test will reveal a great deal..it tests your average over the preceding 3 months rather than just the given moment readings of your meter. I'd suggest you stick to testing only before and 2.5 hours after meals as these are the best signals of how you are coping. Meantime, sounds a hell of lot better than it was...and no sign of more hypos? Good luck.

Hi. First, if not having a low carb diet do go down that route. As you were having hypos, the gliclazide would probably have been causing them and indicates your pancreas at least at present is producing a reasonable level of insulin (glic increases that if the pancreas is able to do it). With the right diet and no excess weight I would see how your readings and HBa1C go and take it from there. The Metformin may need to be re-started by the nurse. You will need to keep an eye on your meter reading as your hospital visit shows something caused your sugars to rise a lot.
