At the beginning of this week I found that the arthritic pain in my knees began to return, and quite badly.

It goes something like only eating/drinking stuff that nuetralizes our body. Fresh lemon, apple cider vinegar, and of course the old fav bicarb. But you can make a drink of bicarb and apple cider vinegar in water - 8 ounces. Loads on google, I know you are always up for a challenge and I hope someone comes up with some good ideas.
Good luck

I had Type 2 Diabetes, but I got rid of it 2 years ago and I have been diabetes free ever since - although, from a medical point of view, once I was diagnosed with Type 2, it was as if I had been stamped with Type 2 on my forehead and from a Doctors point of view, I will never be allowed to get rid of "it".
I have an achy knee. My right one. It got pretty bad when I last had Diabetes, to such an extent that I eventually had to take pain medication to suppress and get rid of the pain altogether, however, I realised back then, that once I began pain medication, what would probably happen was that the pain medication would get stronger, as the previous pain medication, ceased to relieve me of pain.
I began taking 1000mg fish oil capsules in addition to the pain medication - 2 x Panadene Osteo every 8 hours and 5 x fish oil capsules at breakfast and eventually the pain settled down and went away.
I stopped taking the pain medication several years ago and have been relatively pain free, with just the fish oil capsules, these past 2 years and I have stopped taking the fish oil capsules these last 3 months, so far with a very slight amount of pain, being present, when I am upright and walking, but OK when I sit or lay down.
I have found that a heat lamp, applied in small bursts, also relieves pain and inflammation, a friend uses the heat cream used by athletics, to relieve pain.
Pain in the knees or hips, could be caused by arthritis, as you have suggested and as a last resort, the best method to get rid of it altogether is to have knee or hip replacement surgery, which in most cases, provides an immediate pain free experience, with modern surgery techniques.
