T2 honeymoon could be at an end

I don't know if officially T2's can have a honeymoon period, so I will explain what I mean.

After hitting low carb running in March after diagnosis, I found that most of the symptoms of arthritis I have suffered from for 18 years eased. It got better to the point where I was doing many of the things I had been unable to do all those years. Life was amazing and I felt 20 years younger.

At the beginning of this week I found that the arthritic pain in my knees began to return, and quite badly. I had reduced the amount of Naproxen I had been taking, but have found I am back to the prescribed dose, in an attempt to ease things. I had also pretty much stopped the pain killers, I have had to go back on to those as well. This morning, the pain sadly, has returned to one shoulder as well.

The one major difference between now and then is no inflammation. I used to swell terribly which was part of the reason I lost 90% of my mobility. This time there is no swelling at all just pain. I am looking at this or at least trying to, from a glass half full perspective. I have always had so much more trouble in cold weather than warm, so wondering if it could be that? I am still fully mobile and still doing all I have been able to, I just have to manage the pain. I also appreciate the weight loss could also be a contributing factor to the no swelling issue, as I am a lot lighter than I was.

Has anyone else had this kind of 'honeymoon' period, and how did it/has it worked out for you? Feeling a bit gutted about this, as like diabetes I knew arthritis can't be cured, but it had regressed to a very mild form, where I have been unlucky enough to suffer from a rare aggressive strain. I am just hoping with Naproxen and pain meds, I can carry on as I have been, and it doesn't take me back mobility and what I am able to do now wise.

A few years ago (three to four) I started to suffer from gout (which is only another form of arthritis), which crept up on me.
Initially my toe would feel 'bruised' for a few days, and I thought I'd knocked it at some time ( I have a physical job, and don't worry about bumps along the way.)
Then things worsened, and some of my worst attacks were the way people imagine gout to be - foot up, toe throbbing, and NOTHING must come near it !
After extensive research (let's say Google is not my doctor, simply my medical adviser) I stumbled across bicarbonate of soda as a remedy. It works by neutralising the acidity, which was leading to your arthritis.
Well it has worked, and I've been symptom-free for some 18 months now.
I now take it occasionally as an alkaliser to my body, and to head off acid build-up.

It's worth a try. Fairly harmless, dirt cheap. And you can monitor your progress with Ph strips.

Defren, I am sorry that you are now feeling the pain again, I have no advice to offer but just wanted you to know that I'm sending you some hugs!!!

Defren ... I would definitely go with the bicarbonate of soda as an alkaliser or even Alka Seltzer if they still sell that these days.

But bicarb is very cheap and easy to take. I'm not sure how much you should take but here's a link about it.

http://www.health-science-spirit.com/alkalizing.htm

I don't know if you're familiar with Edgar Cayce, known as The Sleeping Prophet. He was a great believer in alkalising with bicarb for a range of medical conditions including gout, arthritis and even cancer. He recommended it to his patients and he also recommended that diabetics eat almonds as part of their regular diet.

I have a friend who astounded some medical researchers when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He signed up for a pharmaceutical research programme and he wasn't happy with some of the side effects of the new drugs they were trying out on him, so he began alakalising his body with a teaspoon of bicarb every day and he stopped taking the meds. Soon after, his tests starting showing an improvement and the researchers weren't expecting such quick results from their drugs so they suspected him of taking other drugs and wanted to know what he was doing. When he told them he was just taking Edgar Cayce's remedy of bicarb every day, they threw him off the trial. :D

He was very disappointed because he thought they'd be happy he'd found a cure, but nope, they were really annoyed. Well let's face it, they're in it to make money from the drugs, not necessarily to cure anyone.

My friend is now 70 years of age, he exercises every day by walking 2 miles and back to the supermarket early in the morning and if he needs more exercise (I can't keep up with him  and I'm ten years younger) he runs up and down the stairs about 20 times.

Best of luck. :)

Thank you all so much. Nik, I love hugs, but can you make them gentle ones just for now?

Unbelievably I had some Alka Seltzer here, I checked the date, they expire 09/13 so I have taken 2. I will do this daily, but I have a couple of questions.

Firstly should I take one or two? Like I say I have taken two today, but for future reference. The leaflet enclosed says each tablet contains:

324mg of aspirin
1744mg Sodium hydrogen carbonate
965mg citric acid

Secondly I take one (not prescribed by my GP but taken following advice) one 81mg slow release aspirin daily as I was in so much pain walking, and since starting the reduced dose daily I have never had a problem. While I am taking the AS should I stop the daily aspirin?

I know no one is a Doctor, but I really would welcome opinions, as I have no idea what is too high a dose of aspirin, until I began taking them for the pain in my legs I had never had aspirin before.

Thanks again - Joanna.

Hi Defren, sorry to hear of your predicament - pissy offie really. The only thing I can think of that may help, is alkalising your body. It goes something like only eating/drinking stuff that nuetralizes our body. Fresh lemon, apple cider vinegar, and of course the old fav bicarb. But you can make a drink of bicarb and apple cider vinegar in water - 8 ounces. Loads on google, I know you are always up for a challenge and I hope someone comes up with some good ideas.
Good luck

Thanks Dawn, I did laugh when you say I am always up for a challenge, because it seems people here know me too well. I will try anything, within the realm of sense, because if you don't try things how will you know? I have taken 2 Alka Seltzer and will see how it goes. I love lemon juice and always have a good supply, so will add a bit extra to my glasses of water, and hopefully it will ease. I don't have any apple cider vinegar, so hopefully the AS and lemon juice will help.

I must admit, it is a bit of a bu**er, I was doing and feeling so well. I will fight this **** thing the same as I fight diabetes. I am NOT going back to where I was.

Hi Defren, Sorry to hear about the resurgence of your symptoms and pain. I'm interested in hearing about your journey with this because I've had a similar journey except I've regained the weight I'd lost and now am struggling with taking it off again. I had heard about apple cider vinegar as a natural remedy but hadn't delved into it - I will now... and hope that bicarb/apple cider vinegar will bring back that pain-free, high-mobility lifestyle.

Hi,
I had Type 2 Diabetes, but I got rid of it 2 years ago and I have been diabetes free ever since - although, from a medical point of view, once I was diagnosed with Type 2, it was as if I had been stamped with Type 2 on my forehead and from a Doctors point of view, I will never be allowed to get rid of "it".

I have an achy knee. My right one. It got pretty bad when I last had Diabetes, to such an extent that I eventually had to take pain medication to suppress and get rid of the pain altogether, however, I realised back then, that once I began pain medication, what would probably happen was that the pain medication would get stronger, as the previous pain medication, ceased to relieve me of pain.

I began taking 1000mg fish oil capsules in addition to the pain medication - 2 x Panadene Osteo every 8 hours and 5 x fish oil capsules at breakfast and eventually the pain settled down and went away.

I stopped taking the pain medication several years ago and have been relatively pain free, with just the fish oil capsules, these past 2 years and I have stopped taking the fish oil capsules these last 3 months, so far with a very slight amount of pain, being present, when I am upright and walking, but OK when I sit or lay down.

I have found that a heat lamp, applied in small bursts, also relieves pain and inflammation, a friend uses the heat cream used by athletics, to relieve pain.

Pain in the knees or hips, could be caused by arthritis, as you have suggested and as a last resort, the best method to get rid of it altogether is to have knee or hip replacement surgery, which in most cases, provides an immediate pain free experience, with modern surgery techniques.

Please stop this **** now! The advice you are offering would have me back in a wheelchair. You are dangerous, go find a bridge somewhere eh?

Peace and love to you Defren, sorry you are having such a hard time. Nothing useful to offer by way of advice, but thinking of you

Thanks Lucy. I prefer your advice to the posters above you (not me, the one above that).

Just playing catch up due to my broadband being FUBAR and couldn't believe how quickly things can change for us on here.

I am so sorry to hear what is happening to you Jo. You worked so hard to get things under control and the this happens. Well here's hoping something will work and you will be able to retain all your hard won mobility and find someway of keeping the pain at bay. If anyone can do it I would bet on it being you. <<<<<<<<<<hugs>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I am taking cherry supplement you can buy the juice from amazon and the pills.
I suffer with joint pain all the time also have gout. I find if I eat gluten or wheat it's much worst. The gout isn't half as bad since taking the cheery supplement.
I know how you feel with the pain makes you so miserable so try anything. Take care.

Thanks Geoff, I will get some apple cider vinegar tomorrow. I have a feeling this is connected to something brewing. My appetite is poor today, I feel light headed, have a slight headache and am very tired. I suspect a bug has got me. From the knee pain early in the week, to how I am feeling now, has been a gradual thing. I wonder if I am heading for the flu, as that would perhaps explain the aches and pains, yet no inflammation, and now the lack of appetite etc seems to be suggesting there is something not quite right. I really hope it isn't the flu, I have never had it, and it sounds 'orrible!

I do just feel very, very yukky at the minute.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, I will be fine, I hate being sick... Bleugh!

(((Jo Anne))) Your a superstar, and you made me smile - thank you. Joanna x

Sorry to hear the news Jo. I'm sure you'll tackle it with the same determination, and success, as you did with the T2. Chin up!

Thanks Sheepy, I really do feel like death warmed up, but I'll be bu**ered if it gets the best of me. I have too much to do over the next few weeks, I don't have time to be sick, so it can bliddy s*d off.

No Lucy, I was waiting for the invite to go and have one. I am due another HbA1c test soon I think and assumed I would get the shot while having blood taken.
