I would so much like to have some HCP to celebrate, but unfortunately I can't. I have been living with type 1 for more than 30 years and never met a really good one. Best I can do is never lose hope, though.
The eye doctor. As it turns out, I had only just been diagnosed with T2 (had not even seen my doctor yet to discuss) but had a routine eye appointment. Not only did she do a thorough check and reassure me that there was "no sign" of diabetic retinopathy. She also expressed genuine concern at the T2 diagnosis, while being optimistic that it would be sorted out with the help of my doctor.
About two months after T2 diagnosis I went to the emergency room with acute abdominal pain. It turned out, after numerous tests and even a CAT scan, to be a kidney stone. When I later had a follow-up visit with a specialist (after "passing" the stone), he said that diabetics sometimes have "uric acid" kidney stones (instead of the more common calcium oxalate ones) and he would be having the stone analysed. He later phoned me to say it turned out to be a common-or-garden calcium stone. By the way, the kidney stone was probably caused by greatly increased exercising without hydrating enough.
The podiatrist. Not only did he give my feet a thorough check for diabetes issues and give the "all clear." He also found that one leg was shorter than the other and prescribed orthotics to correct this. Plus, he fixed some messed-up toenails and gave me advice about foot care. My feet are now in tip-top shape and clearly I was overdue for a foot check, diabetes or not! (We also turned out to have similar life stories and have gone to the same universities, but that's another story.)
