Anyone else get fed up with being offered biscuits, cakes etc when socializing? I suppose people think they are being kind but I get tired of saying,no thanks I'm diabetic! Obviously I enjoy occasional treats but some people at the social groups I attend seem a bit offended if I refuse their sugar laden treats. Emg

It doesn't really bother me to be honest. I think it would if people seemed offended that I didn't take the snack, that has never happened to me though... I think they are just happy because it's more for them haha.

If the person offering the biscuits etc doesn't know you are a diabetic they are just been kind - many people would enjoy such treats. I'd just say I'm a diabetic so sadly I cannot enjoy your lovely treats, simple. If people are offended it's their problem ...

The wife who never eats out, will just say no thank you .. That works .. no need to declare any health problems !
edit to add ... the wife is NOT diabetic

Generally speaking, I just say "Not for me, thanks" and that suffices. If somebody persists, I just say "That looks really nice (assuming it does :)) but I'm afraid I can't eat sugary/carby food (delete as appropriate)".

Of course, some people won't take "no" for an answer.

Pretty much all my friends know that I'm T2 and - although it sounds a bit OCD - I have circulated a note explaining the main things I try to avoid, but also saying that I don't want people (particularly friends) to have to make special provision for me, and I will probably survive, even if they serve me pasta and rice with a mashed potato coulis and butterscotch sauce:D

Never get fed-up, the thought is there and that's all what counts :)

If they persist and won't take "NO thanks" for an answer then they are bullies, and it's certainly not worth you being concerned about offending or upsetting them as they are obviously not concerned about your wishes.

(I'm getting peevish in my old age, and have finally learned not to suffer fools gladly...:D)

Thankyou for your reply robbity, the annoying thing is its usually people who know I'm diabetic who try to tempt me with sugary snacks!

When I met my MP she offered me some cake. I declined, she insisted, I said I couldn't eat it as I am diabetic. She then offered me some grapes! :D

I take my own, same as sweetner for hot drinks. I'm not bothered if I come across as awkward but my health comes first. After all they have the choice to invite me again lol :p

I get a bit fed up at work when the same people serve me every day and ask if i want potatoes/rice/pasta etc and every day i say no thank you, i cant eat carbs.

Sometimes I get fed up that it's all that's on offer - especially if it's when I'm hungry!

Funnily enough I was in the local CO-OP the other day and they had a basket of cake samples beside the check out counter one of assistants ate a few of them then offered me some I said no thanks I'm a diabetic she looked at me with some annoyance and said so am I, shocked I said what are you doing! eating them she replied oh I don't listen to all that nonsense.I just took my shopping and left shaking my head.
