Tesco Finest Spelt and Rye Sliced Loaf - naughty!

I'm pre-diabetic, and I've made a concerted effort to change my diet and eat as low-carb food as possible. However, I allow myself a slice of sourdough bread every so often and my favourite is (was) the Tesco Finest Spelt and Rye Sliced Loaf. I don't mind splurging 22g of carbs occasionally.

Allegedly baked in-store, I was curious as to the ingredients list and found it online. What really disappointed me was, yes, it contains both Spelt and Rye flours as expected but is adulterated with ordinary what flour and durum wheat semolina flours. In fact, enriched Wheat Flour is the first ingredient! As a hobbyist home-baker who feels strongly enough about what's in my loaf to join The Real Bread Campaign, this really annoys me, and I'll be passing what's left of the loaf to other family members.

it goes to show that whatever you buy, if you want to stick to a diet, you need to be vigilant all the time.

I think you’ll find unless you buy your sour dough bread from a true artisan baker then they will be all like this. I doubt any supermarket sells true sourdough- I notice that some sell “sourdough style” bread.

Yes, the Real Bread Campaign has been on a seemingly-endless quest to get rid of "Sour-faux" bread - they need to keep going! This is why I bought a table-top grain mill and made my loaf from scratch. Sadly I don't eat enough bread now to warrant this, and it's one thing I really miss

Maybe become one of those artisan bakers yourself? Or find a little independent shop that you could sell to? Just a thought as it sounds like you know your stuff

I'm like you. I'm having a sourdough bacon sandwich for lunch. This is the one I'm having. There are so many holes in it, though, you can't really butter it, or fill it with egg mayonnaise or tinned salmon. I like the sourdough from Aldi, but that seems to have similar ingredients to the one you mentioned.

I like Allinsons Scandalous Seeds Wholemeal. Tastes really nice and it is 29.2g of carbs per 100g whereas most breads seem to be 40-50g per 100g. Two slices of Scandalous Seeds is about 27g of carbs and makes a lovely sandwich without giving my bg a big spike.
