Tesco New - 'No Added Sugar' Chocy bar!

Just stumbled across a Tesco No Added Sugar Milk Chocolate Bar with surprisingly low sugar content (although saturated fat is slightly higher). I hasten to add I was browsing the chocy aisle for my daughter, not myself... but was forced to buy one just to see what it was like. Honest guv. 8)

Comparing Tesco to say... Cadburys Dairy Milk.

Calories 227 vs 255
Sugar 5g vs 27.8g
Fat 16.7g vs 14.6g
Saturates 9.5g vs 9.1g

Obviously its not going to taste as scrum-diddly-umtious as a bar of Cadburys, but it certainly hit the chocolatey spot :)

The list of ingredients are.... (good job I got the wrapper on my desk ;) )

Isomalt, Dried Whole Milk, Cocoa Butter, Coca Mass, Hazelnut Paste, Emulsifier (Soya Lecithins), Sweeteners (Acesulfame K, Aspartame), Flavouring.

I've annoyingly managed to open the bar over the extra nutritional info but it breaks down the carbs as (per 100g) Carbs 49g (of which sugars 11.0g, of which polyols 38.0g).

I havent the faintest idea what a polyol is!

Polyols are the things that send you rushing to the toilet if you eat too much of them!!These things should have a government health warning on them. :oops:
 
With 49g carbs it will also have big effect on BG levels, personally I'd stay well clear of it.

Polyools don't affect me. I remeber them for the first time in those cool mints, Sorbitol there I think.
Had absolutely no effect on my alimentary system. none of the others does either, but i don't like the taste.

Hi Tils,

Polyols are more usually known as sugar alcohols. The two that are most commonly used in "sugar-free" sweets are maltitol and sorbitol. They are not fully absorbed into the blood stream from the small intestine which generally results in a smaller increase in blood glucose than from regular sugar (sucrose). I believe that something in the region of 75% of a the carbs in a polyol convert to blood sugar. But it is because they are only partly absorbed that they can cause indigestion, bloating and they are extremely powerful laxatives.

These sweets are extremely misleading because their description of "sugar-free" leads people to believe that they do not raise blood sugar - but they do. As far as I am aware the only company that produces a range of chocolate for diabetics that does not cheat by using these laxatives is Hotel Chocolat. Instead they simply use half the amount of sugar that they use in their normal range. Strangely this does not make them particularly bitter tasting.
 
Well all i can say is that, it may contain all that stuff... but you can't taste any of it! I'd rather leave it ;)
 
If you are doubtful about NAS choc, you could try the Diabetic Strawberry Jam from the health store (Revital.) Made with 50% sorbitol. I told the assistant that they shouldn't be selling it, & pointed out the small print. :evil:

I then phoned the head office, & they simply said they hadn't had any complaints. Sellers just don't want to know, & trade on peoples' ignorance. :twisted:
