I posted here yesterday for advice re my husband being recently diagnosed T2, and have to say a BIG thanks to all who responded. We started a low(er) carb diet immediately (he's ok weight-wise but I could stand to lose a few pounds so decided to join him), and today 3 out of his 4 blood tests have been in single figures for the first time since he started testing two weeks ago!

Turns out from the little bit of research I did with your help that the diet we thought would help actually didn't. I know it's very early days but I'm amazed how easily he's taken to making the changes - shopping is going to take longer but that's a small price to pay.

Much love to you all!

This group has been a great help to me so I'm glad to return a little. Please keep in touch and let us know how you both get on!

What a nice post :D glad your hubby is doing so well, when you see success from your efforts I do think it gives you such a boost and it makes keeping on track that bit easier, all the best to your hubby and you well done

Congrats and well done! Go for it with the new diet. My top tip for switching and sustaining it is to keep it interesting. Turn it into a little hobby looking for new recipes and ideas... it's made a HUGE difference to me and now I have a great range of delicious low-carb dishes and alternatives to old favourites that in many ways are even nicer! My blood levels have REALLY dropped since I switched - not to mention the fact that I feel healthier and I've lost 3 stone! Can't recommend it enough! Good luck! :D

Been having a little trouble with the forum app but finally made it back!

Hubby still having a bit of a strop about having to cut down on bread and potatoes BUT before dinner tonight his test was 7.7 for the first time!!

Now he's starting to really see the benefit of cutting the carbs as well as feeling properly 'human' for the first time in ages he's planning to behave himself.

He's away all next week on a business trip which worries me a bit (I won't be there to explain to him how many carbs is actually in what he's eating) but hopefully now he has more idea of what's bad for him he won't go too far wrong.

He's keeping a food diary too so looking back on it might help.

Thanks again for the support, much needed and very much appreciated!

My levels fell slowly over the weeks. They were originally in the 9s and 10s and gradually came down, 8s and 9s, 7s and 8s and so on. After about 10 weeks I started to see the first 5s and now they are regular.

Boiled new potatoes may be OK, much better than mash anyway. I started eating three small new jersey royals when they were in season. For bread, I bake my own using a trusted wholegrain flour. I also have a local artisan baker nearby who does some loaves which are OK for me. Most breads however are not to be trusted. Even Waitrose's wholegrain bread only contains 6% wholegrain flour. Lidl do two packs of wholegrain wheat and wholegrain rye mixes which are good. As always, test before and after and see how you get on. Don't take anything forgranted.

I take nothing for granted, particularly where hubby's willpower is concerned.

Currently trying to stick to a reasonably low carb diet without going too low, too fast - he definitely would give up on that. My real concern is that unless I tell him what he should/shouldn't eat he'll just blithely carry on shovelling in the carbs. Unfortunately I can't go on this trip with him to nudge him toward sensible eating (its only Scotland, but I know from previous trips that when he's stuck out in the test area in the fields the lunch they supply is usually pies!).

He is very good about testing though, and his snacks at the moment are restricted to Atkins bars which are sweet enough to satisfy his biscuit craving but still low in sugar and carbs. Just got to make sure nobody offers him Maryland cookies or all is lost lol.
