This evening someone who should now better said that too many cakes and cokes will cause diabetes. So it is is all my fault then? How about b*****s!

I hear things like that a lot. It's incredibly frustrating!! I've even had some one tell me my diabetes was 'stupid' before. Some people just don't get it. This isn't a choice!!

Sadly, it's still a universal belief!
I work in an office where that attitude is rife, and I've found it disheartening to hear the way that a couple of my colleagues assume that I ate myself into a diabetic stupor. At first I tried to correct them, but after it became clear that it was falling on deaf ears, I just let them get on and think what they like.

Most stupid one I got was from a junior doctor when I was first diagnosed having been admitted to hospital. she told me I was going to be prescribed insulin but should watch out because I could" end up the size of a house" on it. When I asked whether diet or tablets would be an option she replied " you're much to young, tablets and diet wouldn't have a chance" when I pointed out that I was actually 10 years older than she thought I was she replied " are you sure?" Then re- read my notes and said " oh yes you're right, well try tablets for 2 weeks and see how you get on" - I never saw her again

is it considered paranoia to automatically think this post must be about me when I saw the title? :shifty:

Where as I may not be able to say conclysivley my diabetes is stupid (despite my suspicions) it is definatly inconsiderate, totally illogical and quite possably bipolar.

Actually Sotyred, there is some truth in the eating excess carbs thing. If you take in too many carbs you may well become obese and if so, you are more likely to become T2 if you have a genetic disposition to diabetes. The insulation resistance due to the excess carbs can often be resolved by low-carbing and hence removing the diabetic symptoms. Annoyingly some people will never get diabetes no matter how many cakes they stuff themselves with but sadly many do. T1 and T1.5 and some T2s of course are not the result of excess carbs.

It is definitely all of those. But it is also clever in the way that it managed to sneak its way into every corner of my life. But it's not all bad it can come in very handy at times.
