On August 22 2016 I was diagnosed with diabetes and offered drugs, I refused giving myself 3 months to "sort it" My 3 stretched to 4 after my accident also reported on here from which I am still recovering slowly.
I went back for that check up on onday and the results are in!
In the words of my doctor . " the blood tests include full blood count, ESR, Blood film, liver and kidney function tests plus an estimation of blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycides, thyroid functions, calcium, potassium ,magnesium. The hba1C is marginally elevated ( 44) ( I started at 92!) but there has been a vast improvement overall both in lipid profiles, urea, electrolytes and glucose control.
So four months on I am now 48 hba1c points down, 23 kilo lighter, 3 dress sizes down, one blood pressure medication gone and bp down by about 20 points, I still have a long way to go, but what I learned here has made all the difference.
One point I would make is that sometimes its hard to tell what people mean by healthy fats. For me personally I concluded healthy fats was pretty much saturated fats, so I've eaten eggs, bacon, cheese, lard, butter ( a lot) , double cream, clotted cream, the fats off all meats, (indeed sometimes instead of the actual meat , the skin off chickens - duck ft, goose fat, all the things I could never eat before plus a a bit of shellfish, tuna and salmon and the very occasional piece of white fish I use olive oil now and again as a garnish, but mainly I've embraced animal fats , pork rinds and macadamia nuts . On the vegetable front copious quantities of spinach which I use in place of bread - eaten fresh with hot food poured on to ti retains its texture.
I've recorded everything I've eaten in the last three months on chron-o-meter. Th actual figures are in my signature for anyone interested .
A couple of interesting points - fibre- I've averaged only 13g per day, I gave up trying to get it higher - currently had not bowel issue at all if anything better than before . my chron-o-meter showed I was short on calcium, potassium and magnesium, so I had them specifically checked out - all are in the normal range.
I also quite deliberately had a late night burger from a stand last night including the bun and the ketchup - and it had zero effect on my blood sugars . the second time i have eaten any bread in 4 months - eaten at 10.am it spiked me horribly !
All in all the diabetes diagnosis was the best thing that has ever happened to me health wise. It liberated me from a lifetime of dull, dreary, unsuccessful dieting and self loathing.
I just hope the next three months goes half as well !
