The truth about fat. Radio 4

Great find, right at the end she says "we are currently reviewing the NHS eat well plate" right after he points out there is a can of cola on it!! Can you believe that ??? A can of cola on the NHS eat well plate, shocking!

I am so disgruntled with the NHS, honestly, promoting obesity and diabetes since 1984

I almost feel robbed of my health!

Couldn't agree more!!! She was clueless and didn't even know what was on the plate. Shockingly poor advice still being spouted about carbs.

She certainly stumbled over her words. I was following that diet, including loads of high grain cereals and fruit juice. It is possible I would have been diagnosed with diabetes even without that diet, but since I changed and cut out the carbs (as much as is possible) my levels have gone down and I've now lost a stone in weight.

And there IS a can of cola in the picture. It says cola quite clearly.

Did anyone listen to it just now?
If you didn't, it's here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b054t9hn

Thanks for pointing that out. Good old radio 4.

I had to stop listening to the woman at the end, she must think we're all stupid. I loved the way the professor interviewed in the middle tried to say the criticism of Ancel Keys was unfair and then referring to his 7 country study, conveniently forgetting the other 15 countries.

I too feel cheated, my weight started to increase the moment I moved in with my wife and was forced onto a low fat diet, I even gained 3 stones in the first 3 months of us living together. My GP and the hospital dietician didn't have a clue why, except to suggest the salt content of Weight Watchers ready meals. They probably wouldn't have a clue now, in fact none of them have a clue because they just follow guidelines.

I've decreased my carbs and I'm happy with that, I don't worry about eating cheese anymore or having a fried egg but I don't go mad. I suppose only time will tell.

Ansel Keys' research was flawed, of that there can be no doubt. You cannot follow 22 countries and then drop 2/3rds of them just because the data doesn't say what you want it to say and expect there to be an ounce of credibility left in what you have done!!! So heart attack survival rates have increased etc etc, equally smoking has decreased hugely, but why do they always credit it only to low fat diets? The evidence is there for all to see, the massive increases in obesity and T2D since the early eighties cannot be denied. It certainly has never done me any favours whatsoever, semi skimmed milk, no marg on my sarnies, minimal cheese blah blah all for nothing.

Right now, I am furious with the so called health care professionals that surround us. They are out of date with their reading and ideas and so ego driven they refuse to accept they might just be wrong.

One day someone will sue one of these health 'experts' for early amputations, organ damage and so on and with no valid evidence base they are vulnerable. I wonder if they realise that just repeating the mantra of others without checking it's validity is not what a professional should be doing.

Has anyone got a pic of a can of coke on the eatwell plate?

Very interesting and also makes me angry, hopefully there will be a chance for the next generation to be saved from the clutches of the tobacco companies and the processed foods companies and be able to live a happy life :)

Curious that on the second plate cream and butter don't count as milk & dairy!

I guess the idea of the first plate was that portions of things like cola and other sugary foods should be minimal. I'm not sure people would have understood that though.

That will always be a bit tricky. As professionals employed by the DoH they have to stick to the rules else they get struck off.

Who should you really be suing?
