OK – nutritional content info on M&S fresh rye bread is now in:
German Rye Bread
Nutrition info per 100g
225kcal
9.5g protein
40.8g carbohydrate
1.9g sugars
1.1g fat
0.2g saturated fat
6.3g fibre
1.18g salt
Per 100g that’s lower carbs and vastly lower sugars than Irish soda bread, and not a lot more carbs than Vogel soya & linseed.
And now the bad news ... 1 loaf is 400g – you can probably get 15 slices maximum, so minimum 60g per slice = what, 24g carbs per slice? .
So we’re not talking low carb. Oh all right then we’re taking high carb (but low GI, anyone? – I find my BG levels are OK 2 hours after). BUT if you like to have TWO slices of Burgen, why not try ONE slice of delicious fresh rye bread instead? I like to think that as long as I keep the portions small I can still get by. And in case anyone asks-- No -- I am not paid by Diabetes UK (or by M&S) and I do not know Baroness Young personally.
Lucy – do please let me know how the Spelt bread does. Irish soda bread doesn’t spike me, either. Try it with smoked salmon for breakfast – delicious! (and nice alternative if you’re sick of eggs and processed meats).
