Hi everyone, i'm 40 female, fbs=95, bs 2 hour=150. My bmi is 21 and i dont have blood prersure or any other condition. I live in a country which there is no lab to test GAD test, they just predict that my diabetes must be LADA. How can I be sure? do you have any suggestions?
p.s. I didn't have a proper diet,... eating fastfood occasionally, eating choloates and sweet drinks right after my lunch some times.. but still I'm thin with no cholestrol or triglycerides.. I wish i was fat! I wish It could be type 2... is there a possibility that it's type 2?

Dear jack, thanks for your response. You are my first comment here :D. I think i am at early stages of this jurney. If I knew it's the early stages of type 2 , I could hope that I can fix or control it with a healthy life style, but my doctor sais it's the autoimmiune one. My uncle has diabetes too. He was always thin, like me, he started developing it at age 40, and injects insulin.

You aren't diabetic by the numbers. Relax, if you want to look up gtt and drink 75g of sugar and test at 1,2,3 hr to further reassure yourself

Yes, it is possible it is type 2 and I disagree with Jack, I think a postprandial of 150 is worrying.
Type 1 is autoimmune while in type 2 the beta cells of the pancreas fail for other reasons, mainly genetic.
Regardless of type you can come a long way with diet.

Dear Totto, thanks for your response, I hope it's type 2, not LADA, as I'm not fat.
I'll check out these links right away :)
Thank you Jack again, yes I'd better do gtt to know how my body responds to glucose.

Keep an eye on it and test once in a while. If it's Type 1 it should progress pretty quickly and you'll know for sure quite soon. Otherwise, just adjust your diet to remove some carbs (especially sugars) from your diet to try to keep that peak BG below 140.

Consider yourself very lucky to have an alert right at the start before anything really bad has happened! And yes, it could be Type 2, as this has a strong genetic association. If any of your parents or grandparents are Type 2, then there's a good chance that might be what's going on.

Hi Totto. I think many T2s have insulin resistance where there is plenty of insulin around but the muscles can't use it

Hi. Having diabetes yet remaining slim always opens-up the possibility of LADA. Your Fasting sugar is normal so you are possibly only just pre-diabetic. I would just keep monitoring from time to time 2 hours after a meal and see how things go. I would have as much food as you reasonably want keeping the carbs down a bit and having adequate fat and protein. If the blood sugar starts creeping up but you remain slim then LADA may be relevant

People without diabetes but with insulin resistance produce enough insulin to cope while in diabetes you don't, regardless of insulin resistance or not. Thus the problem is failing beta cells in the pancreas. But of course insulin resistance doesn't help matters.

Dear brdavies, type 1 in adults is LADA, which doesn't escalate rapidly, it takes years to destroy all betta cells, as I researched. I will keep on low carb diet anyway... thank you.

I stand corrected! :) I'm not that familiar with LADA. Still working on my own journey!

I think you will find the rate of progression of LADA does vary a lot. In my case it took 5 or more years to really needing insulin from diagnosis of diabetes, yet my nephew was taken by surprise at age 22 with his LADA and ended-up in hospital with DKA; probably all within a year.

I see... I hope you and your nephew are doing fine. I've finally found a lab in my town to take that GAD test. I'm scared :"> But it's better to know the truth.

Hi. Don't worry if you do need to go onto insulin at some point. Having starved myself for a year or two with max tablets to avoid high blood sugar I have found insulin to be a blessing and it's so much easier than the previous generation had to live with. BTW my GAD was negative but my c-peptide showed very low insulin. Something had damaged my pancreas but I'll never know what it was.

Thanks Deibell for encouraging me...

Hi there,
Just to say that my husband developed type 1 diabetes at the age of 43, and his symptoms came on over three to four months. Things declined rapidly in the last month.
I think it would be very wise to just keep an eye on blood glucose readings - any obvious rises, and back to the doctor you go. Low carb would certainly lower any potential spikes, but if it is type 1 on the way, then you will have lower insulin levels and you will gradually crave more carbs.
By the way, all ended well for my husband after diagnosis and both type 1 and type 2 can be managed successfully with a bit of perseverance and determination.
Good to have the heads up so that you can keep an eye on your health, and well done for seeking advice - knowledge is power and in my opinion good control is the key to a happy long life with diabetes.
